The Hoot
Pine Run Elementary School Newsletter 2018
Dear Parents,
Across Pennsylvania, and here at Pine Run, students are gearing up to take standardized tests called the PSSA, (Pennsylvania System of School Assessment).
As educators and parents, we are seeking to prepare our kids for LIFE, and while standardized tests are not exactly a life skill, they are part of their lives. Therefore, teaching children how to best prepare for these tests also help them with other tough school situations that will come their way. Below are our test dates and some simple tips to support your child's test-taking success!
Mrs. Susan Thomas Hosts the POETRY PLAYOFF TOURNAMENT!
The Poetry Playoff Tournament is a bracket-based playoff with “verse” poems competing against “free verse” poems!
Each day teachers will share two poems with their class and the class will vote for their favorite. The winner will move forward on the bracket (posted in the cafeteria). We will move into the Sweet Sixteen Round, then the Elite Eight and the Final Four. The Tournament winner will be read by a special guest on our Friday video announcements.
Some of the poets featured in this tournament are: Naomi Shihab Nye, Kwame Alexander, Jeff Foxworthy, Doug Florian, Nikki Grimes, Lee Bennett Hopkins, and Patricia McKissack.
ABSENT NOTES- DON'T FORGET
The State of Pennsylvania is now monitoring student attendance closely.
As a result of this governance, all absences are documented as unlawful until a note of excuse is received. Additionally, 6 days of unlawful absences now result in a truant case. Once a student is marked a truancy case, the result can be truancy court.
Parents can help prevent against this occurrence by sending in all excuse notes within three days of any absence. The teachers will be sending all notes to the office the morning they are received. Thank you in advance for your help in minimizing any attendance-related challenges.
