What Is A Flow Chart?

A flowchart is a type of diagram that represents an algorithm or process, showing the steps as boxes of various kinds, and their order by connecting them with arrows. This diagrammatic representation illustrates a solution to a given problem. Process operations are represented in these boxes, and arrows; rather, they are implied by the sequencing of operations.



Flowcharts are used in designing and documenting complex processes or programs. Like other types of diagrams, they help visualize what is going on and thereby help the viewer to understand a process

How a Flow Chart Works

Flow charts are easy-to-understand diagrams showing how steps in a process fit together. This makes them useful tools for communicating how processes work, and for clearly documenting how a particular job is done. Furthermore, the act of mapping a process out in flow chart format helps you clarify your understanding of the process, and helps you think about where the process can be improved.



A flow chart can therefore be used to:


  • Define and analyze processes.
  • Build a step-by-step picture of the process for analysis,
  • Discussion, or communication.
  • Define, standardize or find areas for improvement in a process.


Flow Chart Symbols


  • Oval - Denotes the beginning or an end of a program.


  • Flow Line - Denotes the direction of logic flow in a program.


  • Parallelogram - Denotes either either the input or output operation.


  • Rectangle - Denotes a process being carried out.


  • Diamond - Denotes a decision to be made. The program should be continued along the two routes.
