School District of Bloomer
FALL 2023
Hawk Talk With Dr. Bush
Greetings to all Bloomer School District parents, community members, and other interested citizens! My name is Lee Bush, and I’ve been honored to serve the district as the Interim Superintendent for the school year. It has been a whirlwind (of the best kind) getting to know the district staff at each school, and many of the community members at their places of work. I have to say thank you to everyone for the gracious, warm welcome that you have given me. It is truly appreciated.
This is a great school district, and I’m saying this as a veteran educator who has served in over a dozen school districts throughout the country. For instance, today I gave a tour to a school board member who wanted to see the schools. In each and every classroom, we saw teachers teaching, and students engaged in learning. The schools looked beautiful, the floors shiny, and the kids happy. How fortunate you all are to have a dedicated staff taking care of your children!
I urge you to become more involved in your child’s learning this year and make a positive connection with the teachers. Their hearts are with your kids, and, since you know your children best, they always want to have your partnership and support with their education. For those of you with very young children at home, the number one predictor of success in school is if you READ to your child consistently at home before they come to us, and continue that habit after they’ve started school. If children know it’s important to you, it will be important to them.
I’m hopeful to see many of you throughout the year, so please introduce yourself, and let’s talk. Have a great fall season, and please help me in delaying winter for as long as possible so I don’t have to struggle with making the call for snow days!
Respectfully,
Lee Bush
Blackhawk Nation
Building a sense of community and belonging was the goal behind a fundraising campaign started two years ago by the Bloomer School District to make a Blackhawk shirt available for every student to wear for spirit days, sporting events, or extra-curricular activities. It can mean so much to the students to have this visible sign of community. This year each and every student in the Bloomer School district received a "Blackhawk Nation" t-shirt and wore that t-shirt with pride at the 2023 Bloomer Homecoming Pep rally on Friday, Oct. 6.

Empowering Student Design
Middle School students grades 6 and 8 computer classes enjoyed a fun and comprehensive approach to computer Science as they welcomed Jenn Peck of CESA, who brought her Sphero, Mini Robots to share with the class. The goal was to enhance and challenge the engineering design process in students with a focus on Criteria and constraints. It empowered students to design and build a maze with 3 turns, a beginning and an end and the robot ,maneuvering through the maze, had to move or knock over an object. They were constrained by time, materials and a space limit. The experiment encouraged imagination, exploration, teamwork ,and perseverance. Students learned to think like engineers as they designed and then observed each of the various team mazes, offering feedback and solutions. Students were inspired and thoroughly enjoyed the imaginative bases learning program while learning critical problem solving and computational skills.
Bloomer Elementary Welcome Back Celebration
Bloomer Elementary Welcomed Back Staff and Students at an all-school assembly on September 6th. Students cheered as staff members played tug-of-war against each other. The Elementary School is off to a great start!
4 Year Old Kindergarten
The Bloomer Elementary 4K students visited Niblett's Apple Shed on September 20th & 21st. The students enjoyed a tractor ride, story, petting zoo, picking apples, and exploring the playground. Each student got to bring home 5 apples!
The Bloomer 4 year-old Kindergarten program hosted 4K Fall Art Night on Wednesday, October 4th from 3:30-5:00pm. 4K Fall Art Night was filled with smiles! The students enjoyed lacing pumpkins, creating a spooky snack, lacing a necklace, decorating a snap bracelet, and having fun with family and friends! Thank you to all the GREAT high school volunteers! Your help is much appreciated!
1st Grade
Our first graders had a bushel of fun at Ferguson’s Apple Orchard! A big thank you to all the chaperones who helped make this day so special! Also, a big shout out to P.I.E and all families who have donated time/funds to help make this field trip possible! THANK YOU!
3rd Grade
Ms. Wilcek’s 3rd grade class has been loving their mornings. First, they start by greeting their classmates. After a message from the teacher, they jump into social emotional learning. In September, 3rd graders have talked about respect, communication and teamwork. By holding hands, they passed around the hula hoop without dropping it! This activity allowed students to practice cooperation, concentration and encouragement of others. What a cool way to work as a team!
4th Grade
Bloomer Elementary is so grateful and excited to use the new addition to the big playground... a GaGa Pit! PIE graciously donated this using some of the funds from the fundraisers last year. Students are tasked to get others out hitting a ball at opponents feet. Goal is to dodge the ball and be the last kid in. Kids love this new game and have a "ball" learning new strategies to win.
4th Grade took a trip to the Chippewa Moraine Ice Age center in October! They learned about glacial landforms, explored the Ice Age Trail, and also got to learn about native animals in Wisconsin! They even got to hold a snake, and turtle! On our trip we were taught voyager games, and tried each one of the games out!
Can you help us out???
Do you have a band instrument that is taking up valuable closet space in your home? No longer used and collecting dust?
If you have a band instrument that is in good condition and playable, consider donating it to the
Bloomer School District Band Program. There are students that wish to play an instrument but are unable to afford the cost of purchasing one or using a store rental program. We are in need of working instruments for the Beginner Band Program in 5th grade, or students wishing to learn another instrument for jazz. You will receive a letter thanking you for your donation and you can value the instrument for tax purposes. If you have any questions, or wondering if your instrument is usable, please contact Gay Gilbertson, 5th grade band director at Bloomer M.S. Please call Bloomer Middle School, 715-568-1045, ext. 2166 or email at: gay.gilbertson@bloomer.k12.wi.us Instruments may be dropped off at the Middle School office and please leave your name and address so that we can send you a thank you!
Your gift will benefit our community by leading students to success in school, and inspire creativity and expression through playing music.

Choir News
Congratulations to the Choir Section Leaders, (L to R) Dean Herman, Connor Fossum, Allinah Heaser and Isabelle Hammond for attending UW-Eau Claire's Choral Leadership Academy. They had the opportunity to learn from professors and college students while being given hands-on practice in how to lead warm-ups and sectionals and build leadership and teamwork skills within their sections. We look forward to seeing their skills in action this year!
Also a huge thank you to the community for supporting the Choir Fundraiser which teamed up with our very own Bloomer Bakery! Chrissy and her staff made over 3,000 apple cinnamon donuts! This fundraiser will help students purchase their choir jacket and also help pay for the cost of tickets to go see The Lion King at the Orpheum Theatre in Minneapolis in March. Thank you!
