SHEIKO STAFF WEEKLY UPDATE
"LEADING WITH HEART" 1-25-19
GOOD THINGS
- I'm super EXCITED to have our PLC leaders trained and ready to LEAD PLC Meetings. Many thanks again to Wafa, Tiffaney and Shahenda for taking on the role.
- Our Lego Team will be recognized at the Board Presentation on Monday at 7:00 pm. Many thanks to Cindy Carson for her work and leadership with your students.
- I walked into a classroom on Thursday where the teacher was in tears and I thought what is going on in here. However, as I sat listening to her conversation with her students and how she was handling a situation of bullying in the classroom I was simply blown away by the manner in which she conducted the conversations, time and attention to the student. The student was brave enough to say he was being bullied by his classmates and the impressive response for the vast majority of the class in terms of their responsiveness and reflections. Kudos to Lindsay Dershem for this work. Talk about Capturing Kids Hearts and Restorative Practice in action. AWESOME!
TWO-THUMBS UP
Committing to TWO-THUMBS UP:
- One thumb represents- Giving it your BEST
- The other thumb represents- Working to Completion
- Capture and post their commitment with a Two-Thumbs Up Pledge visible in your class or on their locker.
Take a few minutes to talk to your class about the goal of 60% of our students meeting their expected growth target in the area of reading and math as measured by the MAP by June 30, 2019.

Message from our READING CONSULTANT- Susie Englehart
Thank you for updating the Sheiko Data wall as you assess your students. This has been very helpful when determining which students will receive Tier 3 reading intervention. Please have your Tier 2 students assessed no later than February 13th and share information with Susie as you determine if a student qualifies for Tier 3 support.
Sheiko 2018-2019 Reading Data Wall
Please refer to page 2 of the Sheiko Schedule for Guided Reading and Intervention groups for updated February criteria. When you have a chance, discuss with your PLC how your I&E (SET) time is going. A great goal for your grade level is setting up reading groups together, we can talk about this more at our grade level data dig in March.

If you need any help with scoring or analyzing your F&P assessments please see Susie Englehart, Margaret Reynolds, or Melissa Levin. You can also refer to the Assessment Guide in your F&P kit section 2 and 3.
February 1st WORLD READ ALOUD DAY!! from Cindy Carson
World Read Aloud Day is Friday, Feb 1st
(it is a half day of school /Tuesday Specials Schedule). I’ll be at Scotch,
Kate Messner has organized a contact list to SKYPE or video chat with an author, see the details below.
I searched through the complete list & there are a few authors with available time slots, who you may be interested in connecting with. I copied their information at the bottom of this list.
For the complete list, go to:
Don’t let the “skype” or video chat part prevent you from reaching out to the authors. Technology Support, Rachelle, or I can help you prepare for that part.
Take a peek at the list below & if you’re interested reach out to an author. It would be a fun way for you & your students to celebrate reading.
WORLD READ ALOUD DAY IS FEBRUARY 1, 2019
The authors listed below have volunteered their time to read aloud to classrooms and libraries all over the world. These aren’t long, fancy presentations; a typical one might go like this:
1-2 minutes: Author introduces himself or herself and talks a little about his or her books.
3-5 minutes: Author reads aloud a short picture book, or a short excerpt from a chapter book/novel
5-10 minutes: Author answers a few questions from students about reading/writing
1-2 minutes: Author book-talks a couple books he or she loves (but didn’t write!) as recommendations for the kids
If you’re a teacher or librarian and you’d like to have an author Skype with your classroom or library on World Read Aloud Day, here’s how to do it:
Check out the list of volunteering authors below and visit their websites to see which ones might be a good fit for your students.
Contact the author directly by using the email provided or clicking on the link to his or her website and finding the contact form. Please be sure to provide the following information in your request:
Your name and what grade(s) you work with
Your city and time zone (this is important for scheduling!)
Possible times to Skype on February 1st. Please note authors’ availability and time zones. Adjust accordingly if yours is different!
Your Skype username
A phone number where you can be reached on that day in case of technical issues
Please understand that authors are people, too, and have schedules and personal lives, just like you, so not all authors will be available at all times. It may take a few tries before you find someone whose books and schedule fit with yours. If I learn that someone’s schedule for the day is full, I’ll put a line through their name – that means the author’s schedule is full, and no more visits are available. (Authors, please send an email to me know when you’re all booked up! And please note that due to travel and other obligations, it may take up to a week for me to update.)
You may want to have a sign-up Genius to have a parent or two come in to read to the class. Promote family reading together this week. I encourage you to have your class participate in some manner. Capture your class on Twitter #Sheiko2020 .
March is Reading--"Celebrating the Joy of Reading"
- Every classroom door decorated with their favorite book, the class may choose or it could be the teacher's favorite book. Solicit parent support to help decorate the door together or identify students in the class that may take on the task or assist you with decorating your door. Let's have fun with the doors. Be Creative. This is for all classroom doors in the building.
- Beginning next week Cindy Carson will be taking pictures of teachers with their favorite book. She will then create a poster to hang outside your door or around the building.
- Plan a day or week where you have parents come in to be mystery readers to your class.
- Building-wide READ-IN/Pajama Day-
- Book Trivia at lunch
- Invite Central Office over to Read with your class.
These are just a few ideas.

HEARTS
In your mailbox, you will find a bundle of colorful hearts. These are to be used starting Feb. 1. They are really up to you how you want to use them, but some ideas include writing an affirmation to each of your students and putting in on their locker. You could leave one for your students on their work area or give as an affirmation.
These are just to have a little spirit during the month of February. If you have any questions or good ideas, please let me know.
Thank you,
Tiffaney
Families in Need
WBSD staffers ~
As Teachers you are often closest to the families and their needs, Our Children’s Fund would like to provide assistance to any family who has or is impacted by the government shutdown. Please reach out to your Social Worker, Principal or Counselor to help provide for any family that may need assistance during this time. An application for assistance is attached.
We are here to help in these very uncertain times. Our Children’s Fund will assist on a situation by situation basis.
Please email to janet.simon@wbsd.org the request form and any additional information.
