American History Database updates
I am pleased to announce three new Topic Centers that are now live in American History Online:
Civil Rights Movement
Thanks largely to the landmark Brown v. Board of Education case of 1954, which declared that segregated schools were unequal and therefore unconstitutional, the civil rights movement began to gain momentum. This movement, led by such activists as Martin Luther King Jr., espoused nonviolent protest as a means to ending racial segregation and promoting equal rights for African Americans.
Landmark Supreme Court Cases
The Supreme Court issues decisions that shape American law, define the functioning of government and society, and address the most important issues of the day. Famous cases like Roe v. Wade, Plessy v. Ferguson, and Miranda v. Arizona are among the most important decisions made by the court, but many others have also had a profound impact on the American way of life.
Progressive Era
On many measures, events that occurred in the Progressive Era mark a watershed in American historical development. American cities and businesses grew; the suffrage movement began; new cultural ideas started spreading; and many varieties of reform took place on the local, state, and national levels.
Screen Free Week
The annual Screen-Free week celebration is coming up soon, and offers many opportunities for libraries, schools, communities, and families to unplug and celebrate in whatever way works best.
Many educational, medical, and mental health professionals agree that taking a break from screens has significant benefits! Screen-Free Week (May 2-8) is an annual invitation to play, explore, and rediscover the joys of life beyond ad-supported screens for entertainment. Adopting regular screen-free practices all year long - not just during Screen-Free Week - is not about going without. It’s about what you can get and what you can discover beyond using screen-based activities for entertainment purposes.
Unplug to recharge! Give yourself a screen break, bond with family and friends, rediscover long neglected interests, visit your local library, and discover new interests beyond screen entertainment.
The Screen-Free Week website is a great place for information and resources: https://www.screenfree.org/ You can find tips, activities, and promotional materials for families and individuals, schools and libraries, and community organizations. Reading is one of the best ways to go screen-free. Double the fun and celebrate Children’s Book Week at the same time as Screen-Free week!
Visit your school library or public library during Screen-Free week to start the celebration!

Overdrive maintenance
Between May 3 and July 28, 2022, OverDrive will perform server upgrades to enhance the performance and security of the systems used to access your digital collection.
We will complete these upgrades between 6 a.m. and 8 a.m. Eastern Time on Tuesdays and Thursdays only during the period noted above. Your OverDrive service will be impacted only once for approximately 60 minutes or less.
We expect the impact to your users to be minimal. They will still be able to sign in to your digital collection and browse or read titles, but may encounter errors when attempting to borrow, place a hold, or return titles during your maintenance period.
We appreciate your understanding. Please contact your Account Manager with questions.
Thank you,
OverDrive
