NEWSELA
Great FREE source for nonfiction literacy and current events
Why use NEWSELA?
Read closely.
Think critically.
Be worldly.
Newsela is an innovative way for students to build reading comprehension with nonfiction that's always relevant: daily news.
Newsela allows readers flexibility in reading news articles at the level that’s right for them. Newsela uses a student’s quiz performance to determine the just-right level of complexity. Newsela gives readers the option to level up or level down with each article.
This leveling feature also allows readers to stretch themselves by seeing what the next level of text complexity looks like. At any time, they can test themselves on their ability to read ahead of their current level – and get immediate feedback on their understanding. Likewise, when they need a little extra help with a difficult concept, they can level down.
The same strategy also helps them to re-read the same text multiple times. Because each article is different at each level, they are reading a new version of the article that has its own interesting text features and arouses new curiosity in the reader. As any teacher knows, it’s very difficult to get a reader to read a passage more than once, but re-reading is an essential behavior of strong readers. Newsela makes this behavior natural and easy.
