Joe from Freedom Summer
He's quite the character!
Some character traits of Joe:
Joe was a very giving character because he gave several things without being asked or even second guessing it. First, Joe gave John Henry a popsicle without John Henry asking. Secondly, he gave John Henry a beautiful friendship even when the law said it was okay because of their skin color.
Joe was very friend towards John Henry right from the beginning. It didn't matter to him that John Henry's mama worked for his mama. He was still friendly and play often with John Henry.
Joe thought about all his actions in the story. He also thought about how John Henry felt when he wasn't allowed to go certain places, or do certain things because of his skin color. Joe wouldn't go to the town pool at the beginning of the book because John Henry wasn't allow. So instead, they went to Fiddler's Creek.
But, most importantly:
Joe is BRAVE!
As John Henry's best friend, Joe has to be very brave. While they were friends, it was a time of separation. The law changed and everyone was allowed to be together, not matter what color. Joe had to be brave as he was someone who was always friendly with someone of a different color in the 1960's in his town.
