August Newsletter

Rolland-Warner 6/7 Campus

Stevens Scribbles

As we look forward to seeing students back in the halls at Rolland-Warner, now less than a month away, we are doing our best to prepare a safe and welcoming atmosphere with the many precautions that are mandated. Just know the safety of our students has been and will continue to be of utmost importance and our instructional plan for this school year will reflect this.

I know our year-round students were set to start last month, however, the uncertainty and climate caused a one-year suspension of the the year-round calendar and now all students will be starting together on August 31st. You will see revisions to the events in the calendar below reflecting this change and adapting our "normal" operating of these events.

We are making our best effort to offer multiple options for schedule pickup from contact free to options that are similar to a traditional walk-through schedule pickup and tour, please see below for specifics on each option and choose the option you and your family are most comfortable with. Due to limits placed on us, we do ask that only one parent and the student(s) enrolled at RW attend the traditional walk-through option.

Along with all the changes that have arose due to COVID-19, we do have some changes in the district that affect the building as well. The first and most exciting change is the moving of PLTW programs from CFI to RW! No longer will the students need to board a bus to go to CFI for PLTW or have the study hall time in the cafe. Please see below for our daily schedule and the 6th Grade Parent Video that will be sent out at a later date for further information.

I would be remiss if I didn't speak to possible hesitations on the upcoming school year. I understand that there are differing viewpoints and want to stress that Lapeer has an option for each viewpoint from the Lapeer Virtual Partnership (Previously called Homeschool Partnership), Lapeer Virtual, or traditional schooling, all of which can be found on our homepage! If you have questions do not hesitate to contact our office or call the number specific to each program found on the website! We are here to help and walk you through the options.

Finally, as changes occur, you will be kept up-to-date through school messenger, social media, and our webpage! I look forward to meeting our new 6th grade group and seeing our returning now 7th graders soon!

Student Handbook Notes - Provide an Up to Date Immunization Record

In order for our 7th grade students to avoid any delay in starting classes please provide an up-to-date immunization record. Please see the attached information on immunizations in this newsletter for specific information about where and when you can update student immunizations. For 7th grade students, immunizations are required for students to be completed before the first day of school. This means that they need to be taken care of this summer. Students are not permitted to be in school without these immunizations completed. To avoid having students held out of class, please review this information and schedule appointments as soon as possible.

Along with the below school supplies, our teachers always appreciate classroom supplies like tissues, cleaning wipes, hand sanitizer, and Expo markers! Give a teacher a pack of Expo markers and they are like a kid with candy!!!

COVID-19 Updates

District Preparedness Plan

Every district in the state of Michigan, through executive orders, have been directed to publish Preparedness Plans. Lapeer Community Schools has multiple as directed and can be found here for your review: LCS District Preparedness Plan

Instructional Plan Basics

Guidance from the “MI Safe Schools Return to School Roadmap” provides required and strongly recommended safety protocols to keep school communities safe based on the status of the coronavirus. This document lays out the guidelines for schools reopening based on the current phase of reopening the State is in. The most likely scenarios are that we will be in Phase 4 (the phase we are currently in) or Phase 3. The difference between the two phases is a big one though. Phase 4 allows for in-person instruction while Phase 3 allows for only online instruction. Because these are the most likely scenarios, this newsletter will focus only on the instructional plan for these two phases.

Phase 4 Instructional Plan (In-person Instruction)

Under the Phase 4 instructional plan, students will attend school at Rolland-Warner 6/7 Campus with the following changes and safety precautions in place which adhere to the requirements and recommendations laid out in the MI Safe Schools Return to School Roadmap. In an effort to be succinct in this newsletter, only the main precautions will be listed. Please refer to the FAQ posted on the LCS website for more detailed information. You can find that here: Lapeer Community Schools Return to School Roadmap FAQ

In the upcoming weeks, we will be putting out a FAQ specific to Rolland-Warner that will have more of the building specifics.

  • All students and staff are required to wear facial coverings (required by MI Safe Schools Return to School Roadmap).
  • Additional cleaning protocols will be in place
  • Additional hand sanitizer will be available
  • Adjustments to lunch schedules will be made to promote social distancing and adhere to requirements
  • Adjustments to all seating and procedures to ensure social distancing is accomplished as much as possible

Phase 3 Instructional Plan (Online Instruction)

The online instructional plan that was implemented in April of last school year was created in a very short amount of time with limited training for students, staff, and parents. While I strongly feel we put together a high quality instructional program in limited time under difficult circumstances, there was certainly room for improvement. Because we have had more time to prepare, our online instructional plan for the 2020-2021 school year (if needed) will be much more rigorous and robust. We are currently working on finalizing the details of this plan. In the event the State is moved into Phase 3, the particulars of the online instructional plan will be communicated to families at that time.

Band Help!

If you have the ability we would appreciate the assistance!

Attention crafters and those with sewing skills! We are looking for donations of masks/facial coverings and musical instrument masks/coverings (see link below for patterns) for students who will be returning for Face-to Face instruction. Any number of masks that can be provided will be deeply appreciated. Thank you for your support in helping students return to school and participate in the programs they love. Please contact Mrs. Fenner with any questions at lfenner@lapeerschools.org.

Rolland-Warner PAC Meetings

We have completed all our PAC meetings for the year. I appreciate the parents who volunteered their time to visit with me monthly and discuss various aspects of the school. I use these PAC meetings not just to share information and explain programs at Rolland-Warner, but also to get feedback from parents on areas that may be lacking. These meetings really help me keep my finger on the pulse of our families (which really are our customers). For those parents who have a student at RW next year, I look forward to seeing you in September for another round of PAC meetings (with Zoom options to increase one's ability to attend), and for those moving on to Zemmer I encourage you to join Dr. Stanton for PAC meetings there!

Here is a list of the RW PAC meetings for the 20/21 school year that will occur close to the third Friday of the month at 9:30 am-10:30 am in the Rolland-Warner conference room and/or Zoom, so you can put on your calendar: Sept. 18, Oct. 16, Nov. 13, Dec. 18, Jan. 22, Feb. 26, Mar. 19, Apr. 16, and May 21.

Wyatt Stevens is inviting you to a scheduled Zoom meeting.

UPDATES:

We plan to begin practices/play sports this fall as scheduled (practice times and locations below), provided that we remain in Phase 4 of the MI Safe Start Plan. Please understand that this is a rapidly changing, fluid situation. We will keep our parents and student athletes as informed as we possibly can as we move toward the start of the 2020-2021 school year.

In order to keep everyone as safe as possible, we will not conduct our Fall Sports Parents’ Meeting/Meet the Coach Night in person as we have done in the past. Instead, it will be a recorded informational presentation that will be posted to YouTube. The link will then be posted to our social media pages such as RW Facebook and www.lapeerlightning.com. In order to make sure that we have any potential updates and information as up to date as possible, the video will not be posted until mid-August. In addition, the Meet the Coach portion of the meeting will be conducted by the coach of the individual sport at a later date prior to the start of the season.

The Athletic Clearance Process remains the same, however, all paperwork must be turned in to Ms. Dean in the RW main office. The RW main office will open on Monday, August 3rd for normal hours. Due to COVID 19 precautions, we ask that you please call ahead and make sure that the main office is able to accommodate your athletic clearance needs prior to arriving at the building. Information will be forthcoming regarding when parents may begin paying pay-to-participate fees. We are recommending that you do not pay this fee until we are sure the first game/contest will take place as scheduled. Practices will begin as scheduled on Monday, August 31st.

Signups for each individual sport are posted at the links below. If you have not yet signed up your student athlete for the sport they are interested in playing this fall, please do so at your earliest convenience.
