Course selection processes for 2023
All of our students have begun their course selection processes for 2023. This process is important because course selections drive our timetable development.
The current work in Tutor Groups for students around their career and pathways options complements the process. Assemblies will further inform students and they will be emailed information following those assemblies.
The college's Careers and Options evening is held on Monday 8 August from 6pm-8pm. Please come along and encourage your child to discuss options, careers and pathways with the experts who are available on the evening. Students can log in to Careers Central for further information.
Parents and whanau can contact Heads of House or curriculum leaders in subjects to discuss course selections. All students should be considering three key questions for course selection:
- "What do I enjoy?"
- "What am I good at?"
- "What leads to my preferred careers/pathways?"
Our curriculum leaders offer the following advice for students, beyond what is in the Course Information Booklets on StudentHub:
Year 11 Compulsory courses
11MAI, 11ENG and 11SCG are the Year 11 courses suitable for most students and offer broad pathways at and beyond school.
11MAA (Year 11 Advanced Mathematics) and 11SCA (Year 11 Advanced Science) courses will be selected based on Year 10 results in 2022. Any student who wishes to be considered for the advanced courses will need to select 11MAT or 11SCI on the portal.
Only those students who are strong in Algebra skills and are hoping for a mathematics rich career (e.g. engineering, bio-medicine) should select 11MAT.
Students needing a multi-science pathway at school and beyond (e.g. Chemistry and/or Physics) should select 11SCI.
Year 12 University Entrance Literacy
Selecting 12ENG or 12ENI will enable students the opportunity to gain the University Entrance Literacy requirements. Students who do not wish to take Year 12 English will need to plan an alternative literacy programme.
Performing Arts courses (Year 10- Year 13)
Performing Arts courses require performance. Music, Drama and Dance students are required to perform in front of audiences of peers and the general public. This includes ensemble and solo performances. Music students should have instrumental training for at least three years before selecting NCEA Level Music courses.
PISA research taking part at Rosehill College
Rosehill College has been selected for an important international research study in education called PISA.
New Zealand is one of over 80 countries taking part in this research. When you hear in the news that New Zealand 15 year-olds are 8th in the world for reading skills and 7th in the world for scientific literacy, we know this through PISA research.
This information is crucial to identify what is working (or not) for which students and in what situations. PISA research provides some of the most important information used by school leaders and education decision makers for monitoring and improving the quality of our education system for all students in New Zealand.
PISA is organised in New Zealand by the Ministry of Education and is classed as a "Tier 1" data collection meaning it is the most important and trustworthy data collections in New Zealand.
Everyone in the education system benefits from PISA by having a greater understanding of the knowledge and skills of our students alongside what we can improve for them.
Rosehill College would like to thank the students involved in assisting with this study.
Huge THANK YOU to New World Papakura!
A huge thank you to New World for their ongoing support in providing us with food for our students!
Recently, we received 275 muesli bars for our sports students who would otherwise have been unable to perform at their best being without healthy energy bars between school closing time and their sports training.
Tree planting trip - Environmental Council
During the holidays the Environmental Council and other keen environmentalists from our Kura went over to Motuihe Island to help with the project to turn the island into native forest. We planted around 80 trees which will help soak up CO2 and provide habitat for native birds. We even saw a Tuatara! We are planning on doing more tree planting days this year so watch this space.
Spoken Word Performance at Youthline by Tumanako Parekura-Nissen
On Wednesday evening Tumanako Parekura-Nissen performed her spoken word poem at Youthline in Papatoetoe.
She performed strongly and clearly, receiving very positive feedback from her peers, coaches, teachers and whanau of other performers.
Her message was awesome. Spoken word poetry is such a powerful tool and form of expression.

Tautoko te rā daffodil - Friday 26th August 2022
Daffodil Day symbolises hope for all New Zealanders impacted by cancer.
Every day 71 New Zealanders are diagnosed with cancer. For over 30 years New Zealanders have supported the work of the Cancer Society on Daffodil Day and we need your help again this year.
Whether it's driving someone to their treatment, providing advice to someone who has rung our 0800 number, or sitting with them during their treatment - the Cancer Society is there. But we can't do this without your help.
Every dollar raised for Daffodil Day will go towards cancer care for patients and their whānau, education and awareness programmes, and life-saving cancer research.

― Ātikara Tārekareka (Sports Bulletin) ―
It’s been a busy week with lots of our teams hustling to make finals. Most seasons will end during week 4 and we have scheduled sports photos for Tuesday 23 August, a timetable will be published and sent to all players early next week. Where a season has finished, we ask that uniforms be returned to the Sports Office as soon as possible, we will have these available on photo day, otherwise we ask that uniforms be brought clean on photo day ready to be returned after the photo is completed.
Well done to our teams who attended the Hillcrest Sports Exchange on Tuesday. Unfortunately we were unable to come away with the shield this year, but I know many teams are already planning how we will win it back in 2023.
