Duneland School news for parents, students and teachers
Thursday, May 21, 2020 Vo. 54 No. 40
Message from the Superintendent
As the 2019-2020 school year winds down, thank you to all DSC students, families, teachers and staff for your time, talent, energy and compassion during these unprecedented times. We will continue to communicate with you during the summer in the DuneNews. You can expect to receive the newsletter on Thursday or Friday each week.
Our students have shown incredible flexibility while adjusting to a ‘new normal.’ We are disappointed that we have been unable to
share many of the end-of-year, traditional, rite of passage moments with you. While those events are memorable for students, they are also important to adults as we celebrate your milestones with you. We hope to celebrate with the Class of 2020 in July with an in-person graduation ceremony. Our seniors have exhibited a tremendous amount of grace this spring and have been brilliant role models for our underclassman.
Our families have learned more than they ever wanted to know about Canvas, Google meetings, and Zoom calls. The understanding and support for Remote Learning has extended into your homes way more than we had hoped. We recognize your challenges and we will continue to support your children as we move into the summer and next school year. While we don’t have specifics yet on the 2020-21 school year, we are committed to providing a world-class education for your kids.
Our teachers have been stretched to limits they could have never predicted. You have expanded your repertoire to reach students in ways you may not have thought were possible. We are proud of the innovative practices, use of technology and the commitment you have shown to your students. Many of you have stated that Remote Learning has reinforced the notion that nothing replaces direct instruction and relationship building that can only take place when meeting in person. I agree. We will continue to implement and expand best practices in face-to-face learning, remote learning, blended learning, and online course content development…while not losing sight of the importance of the relationship between a student and teacher that is at the core to the learning process.
Our administrators and staff have done a fantastic job supporting students, teachers and families. There are many people working behind the scenes to make sure we effectively close out the 2019-20 school year, while preparing for unknowns this summer and into 2020-21.
Thank you.
Dr. Chip Pettit
Superintendent of Schools
Last week, DSC release its Action Plans (charts) and three planning documents that helped inform the team during the process, with a request for the Duneland School community to provide feedback (affirmations, questions, concerns).
The Strategic Planning team appreciated the feedback received and will be making any necessary adjustments before making a recommendation to the school board at the June 8, 2020 meeting.

REFERENDUM SPOTLIGHT - Security Camera Upgrades
On May 7, 2019, residents living in the Duneland School Corporation boundaries voted to continue a twenty-two cents ($0.22) tax levy originally approved in 2012, for the purposes of maintaining the current educational and operational programs of the Duneland School Corporation. Each month this section of the newsletter will highlight a different initiative or program being funded by referendum dollars. This month, DSC is highlighting our Security Camera Upgrades.
The Duneland School Corporation is in the process of installing/upgrading security camera systems in all school buildings. The intention of school security camera systems is to curb behavioral issues and increase security within the school premises. DSC is placing 373 cameras near entrances, stairwells, hallways, common areas, building perimeters and parking lots.
School security cameras aid in the prevention of bullying, truancy, theft, property damage and keep outsiders from entering the premises unnoticed.
Not only do school security cameras help maintain safety around schools, they also discourage misbehavior. Visible security camera systems have been shown to drastically reduce unwanted behavior.
For more referendum information, go to: https://www.duneland.k12.in.us/domain/367
The Duneland School Corporation would like to thank the community for their support, and in turn, pledges to be innovative and responsible stewards.

But, the WORK is here for everyone to experience. For your convenience, please visit either of the two links below to view the exhibition. Student Device Updates for DSC Families
As Duneland School Corporation (DSC) prepares a variety of instructional plans for the 2020-2021 school year and beyond, the intent of this message is to provide clarity on our current 1:1 device plan and provide insight into how DSC may transition into a sustainable long-term model over the next couple of years. This summer, students will keep their current learning device (iPad or PC) for continued use during the 2020-2021 school year (see chart at the end of this document organized by current grade level). Current filtering practices and security software will remain active over the summer.
DSC will continue to implement and expand best practices in face-to-face learning, remote learning, blended learning, and online course content development. As we move forward, DSC will be working to increase our understanding of personalized learning for students while ensuring equity for all students when it comes to accessing content, resources, and learning opportunities whether in person, remotely, or in a hybrid way.
Reliable learning devices will be crucial for our continued development and equitable access for all students. With that in mind, DSC intends to allow students to keep devices year round in 2020 and beyond. This is likely to impact family decisions on purchasing a computer for student use at home, in addition to a computer issued by DSC. While students will still be able to bring a device from home to school, they will be required to always have their DSC issued device in their possession while on campus.
Beginning with the 2020-2021 school year, DSC will include a device protection plan as part of student fees to aid families in guaranteeing needed access. This protection plan is expected to be in the $20 range depending on the device. At the end of the 2020-21 school year, devices purchased when DSC implemented the 1:1 initiative will have reached their end of life. At the beginning of the 2021-22 school year, most students will receive new tablets or PCs. Over the next year, DSC will be exploring different sustainable long-term funding models for student devices. DSC will also continue to re-examine curricular resources at all grade levels and courses to best support student achievement while keeping costs reasonable for families.
Thank you for supporting your child's learning needs now and into the future.
