Don't Worry, Be Happy Now!

Can stress be a good thing?

"When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change." -Dr Wayne Dyer

What is stress?

Stress is anything that poses a challenge or a threat to our well-being. It has always been seen as a bad thing, but there are reasons and explanations on why/ how it's good. Below are some points on why some people believe it's bad and why others believe it's good.

The Bad

Why is stress bad?

Heavy amounts of stress or long-term stress can cause the body to wear itself down. Stress keeps you from achieving goals or tasks and inhibits your ability to function on a daily basis. It can also cause you to grow more vulnerable to serious health problems! Yikes!

The Good

On the bright side

Now for the part that explains how stress is actually a helpful feeling. There is an idea that says stress is only harmful when you believe it is stressful. Evidence that proves this theory is from an experiment conducted where 30,000 randomly selected people where asked how much stress they experienced in the last year and if they thought stress was bad for them. These people were then tracked for 8 years and data was collected. The results showed that the people who believed stress was bad for them had a 43% increased risk of dying. In the experiment the people who experienced a lot of stress but did not view stress as harmful, had the lowest risk of dying. This experiment shows how stress is only a bad thing when you believe it is bad. It's like what Dr Wayne Dyer says, "When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change."

Stress is only bad when you believe it is bad. If you perceive it as a good thing, it can help you achieve your greatest goals and dreams!

"When you change your mind about stress, you can change your body's response to stress." -Kelly McGonigal
