Stowe Robotics Update
The robotics team competed in its first competition this past weekend at Western New England University. Not only did they manage to finish 23rd of 36 (against all more experienced teams), they went on to win the Rookie All-star Award! This level of success is very unusual for a first-year team in its first-ever competition.
These kids have exceeded all expectations, showing resilience, grit, and ingenuity. The team had to solve complex computer science and engineering problems over and over again, under extreme time pressure, wowing judges and coaches from other teams.
Here is a short video of what a match looks like . We are team 9096 (Bad Weather) and you'll see our number on the bumper of our robot. They competed in about 13 of these match over 2 days to get their ranking. The first few seconds are autonomous (driven by code alone, drivers are hands-off). For the remaining seconds, the robot is remotely controlled by our student drivers from behind the plexiglass panels.
Check out a small selection of photos of the students at work here.
We have ten days to work on the robot and improve a few things, and then we go on to our next competition at WPI on March 31st.

Spring Sports begin on Monday March 20th for all High School Sports. Please check out the schedule for practices. Once the teams have been set, rosters will be added to the weekly schedule.
A reminder for all student athletes, please make sure to communicate with your teachers when you will be out for games or events. It is your responsibility to get any assignments for any classes missed and to turn them in on time.
Lastly, ALL FALL and WINTER SPORTS UNIFORMS MUST BE RETURNED BY THE END OF MARCH OR YOU WILL BE CONSIDERED INELIGIBLE.
If you have any questions or concerns please let me know.
Sportsmanship
We have a long standing tradition of strong support for our student athletes. This often looks and sounds like big and loud cheering sections. Loud and proud is great. We love the community support for our teams. However, recently we’ve seen an uptick of inappropriate behaviors across the State at sporting events. We are not alone. Many schools across the state and nation are facing spectator challenges during sporting events. Referees are quitting at high rates because of spectator behavior. Many schools in our state recently stopped allowing spectators at games and even forfeited games because of spectator issues. We don’t want this to happen at Stowe. The Vermont Principal Association has worked diligently in the past few years to encourage positive spectator behavior. (See image below) You’ve seen many posts in this newsletter and other places about this effort. This is one reason we read appropriate spectator behavior statements prior to sporting events.
While we’ve had mostly positive and fun times at our home games this year, recently there have been negative chants and attitudes towards opposing teams, individual players, and officials. We can be better. Some of you and your friends may disagree with what we (Stowe) and VPA are calling ‘negative’ (see below) and that is your right. But, moving forward, we need the energy and noise to be positive and in line with the expectations listed below. We are an amazing school and community and we need to show this at our events. Games are an opportunity for us to be encouraging and empathetic. Please support our efforts to maintain a highly positive and welcoming environment at our games. You can help by asking those around you to be positive and help explain to your kids that being energetic and excited at games is great, but saying mean and hurtful things are not. Please report any concerns to us during or after games. This is also a reporting form that goes directly to the VPA.
