Muldoon Newsletter - February/March 2022
A Note From Mr. Grant
Muldoon Families,
It's hard to believe that we are in the month of February already. The third quarter is quickly coming to an end and the 4th and final quarter of the year begins on March 14th. The students at Muldoon have worked very hard these last quarters of school and we should celebrate their efforts. Student safety is a focus of Muldoon Elementary. This is a great time to review with your student pick-up and drop-off safety procedures. Outdoor clothing is another important item to review with your children. The third and fourth quarters are spent learning and teaching and our students need the outlet of recess time to burn off energy.
Please continue to support students arriving each day on time. Breakfast is served in the classrooms at 8:50 every morning. The fourth quarter is critical to your student’s path towards completing their grade-level knowledge. The Alaska System of Academic Readiness (AK STAR) and the Alaska Science Assessment are computer-based assessment administered to students in Grades 3-9 (English language arts and mathematics) and grades 5, 8 and 10 (science) each spring during the state designated testing window. AK STAR and the Alaska Science Assessment are state-required assessments that provide students the opportunity to show their understanding of important skills in these content areas at their grade level. Testing will begin on March 28th and ends on April 8th.
Please click on the link below and complete our School Climate & Connectedness Survey! This survey helps us to know how people feel about learning and working at our school. And it helps us as a school to learn and grow.
There will also be some summer school opportunities in June this year for our students so please keep that in mind when making plans for the summer. More information to come on this great opportunity for your children soon!
Enjoy your Spring Break and may it bring you the opportunity to rest and spend time together.
Sincerely,
Leroy Grant
Principal
Help us - Help you!
Every spring, the Anchorage School District provides a survey to families, staff, and students (grades 3-12) regarding the climate of their school community. This survey information is very important, as it helps us learn how people feel about learning and working in our schools. This survey helps us to grow as a school and as a part of this community. We thank you in advance for your time!

Mr. Grant is Retiring
It is with a sad heart that I am announcing my retirement from Muldoon Elementary. After 14 years of leading this amazing school, it is now time for me to move on to the next chapter of my life. I have dedicated the last 27 years to education, with more than half of that time in service to Muldoon. I want you all to know that serving this community and this school has been the greatest honor of my career. Our community is vibrant, hardworking, intelligent, and caring; I will deeply miss you all. I have had the privilege of watching many members of this neighborhood grow up into adulthood. I have had the opportunity to build relationships with many generations of Muldoon families. I have witnessed former students become parents and bring their own children to Muldoon. I will cherish and take with me all the connections and strength that this amazing community represents. Thank you all for trusting me to lead our school over the years.
We would like to invite you in joining the process of selecting a new school leader. Correction to the original letter that was sent out - The Meet and Greet Please call the office for more info.

COVID testing at Muldoon
Hello Muldoon~
I'm so excited to let you know that ASD has new free COVID testing options IN MULDOON Elementary. This is perfect timing, as many of our community testing sites are very busy with fewer hours and days they are open.
This test is easy (nose swab or spit cup) and fast (results are texted that night, sometimes 24 hours). It is also accurate if you are sick or asymptomatic, which means we can test as often as you like to keep our community and schools healthy.
Call us in the office if you are interested in getting a test!

STEM Corner
Muldoon STEM classes have been a fun and busy place 3rd quarter!
Kindergarten and first-grade students have been learning about energy, the parts of a plant, and photosynthesis. They investigated and planted seeds. The boys and girls are watching them carefully to see which plants grow! They can name the parts of the plant and they know what plants need to live. Next, they will be learning about insects!
Students in grades 2-5 learned about food chains, ecosystems, and the energy pyramid. They constructed 3D pyramids as a final project. Next, is a study of volume, mass, and density! They will also be learning about the Scientific Method!
Stay tuned for more fun in STEM!
