It's March, almost St. Patrick’s Day and our pot at the end of the rainbow runneth over! We feel lucky to have ended the Winter sports season with our girls basketball team finishing as champions and our boys basketball team finishing the season as runner ups in the GWOC tournament! We feel lucky to have an amazing show choir that has swept every competition they attended this season! We feel lucky to have power of the pen members competing at the regional level! We feel lucky to have 402 regional qualifiers in the National History Bee! We feel lucky to have students advancing to the next levels of the Dayton-Area Spelling Bee and the State Geography Bee! We feel lucky to have had the opportunity to celebrate read across America week with our students and staff! We feel lucky to have a great PTO that put on a fantastic spring dance for our students! We feel lucky to get to work with amazing students each day! We feel lucky to have an amazing community and parents that help make all of this happen!
March Madness isn’t just for basketball! As we enter fourth quarter, we will be running a full court press with testing to showcase our talents and scheduling to plan for our future. Grade level meetings to discuss scheduling for next year will begin this Friday, March 15th. Look for information coming home! Students will complete registration forms and get teacher recommendations as needed on March 18th. Online scheduling will be done in Flex on a Thursday, March 21st. The month concludes with a short time out for Spring Break, March 25 - 29. When we return, state testing will begin on April 8 and end on April 18th. Our students have been training hard all year and are going to rock the State Tests! Please make sure your student attends school on time on testing days and has the ear buds and calculator specified in the school supply list. There will be more details about testing coming out soon, so stay tuned!
We couldn't do all of this without our number one fans, our Coy Families! Thank you sharing our students with each day and partnering with us in helping our students succeed!
Mr. Josh Baker, Assistant Principal
Hello Coy Families,
I hope you will take a moment to get caught up on the many positive accomplishments of our students and staff over the course of the last month. Spring is quickly approaching and students have begun their course work in the final trimester of the school year on Monday February 25th and will be beginning the fourth quarter of the school year on March 11th. If you have not checked your student's ProgressBook account recently, now is a great time to do so. As we head into March, we will begin to guide students and families through the registration process for the coming school year and spring testing. Please be on the lookout for more information about course registration soon. I hope you enjoy this edition of the Coy Newsletter as we highlight how we "inspire, empower, and lead" with Coy Pride!
Sincerely,
Mr. Baker

Internet Safety Awareness
The challenge preys on the vulnerability of children, particularly those who suffer from depression, anxiety and low self esteem. In essence, the challenge is a form of cyberbullying that should not be tolerated or promoted.
Our district has many different safety tools in place which include keyword searches, scanning email, chat, docs and so on for inappropriate material, cyberbullying, self-harm etc., but it still does not catch everything nor does it help children on personal devices when they go home.
Below are links to articles for parents about the "Momo Challenge." We hope you find them useful when talking to your child about the importance of internet safety and security.

- In honor of Black History Month, Mrs. Carf's classes collaborated to make posters of Ruby Bridges, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Rosa Parks. This was a followup activity to reading books like The Watsons Go to Birmingham, 1963 and Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, that dealt with injustice. Great way to make connections!
- The 7th and 8th Grade Choirs had an awesome second concert of the school year in February. The choir shared their concert with with WSU University Choir and featured all of our curricular and extra curricular choirs.
- The Coy Robotics team won the Excellence Award and qualified for the state championship competition.

- Students in Ms. Blair's App Creators class were giving presentations on new Apps they created which included a grocery list application and physical fitness tracking application.
- The Beavercreek Band program hosted the OMEA District 12 Middle School Honor Band this weekend. The 8th grade band was conducted by Dr. David Hedgecoth (OSU) and the 7th grade was under the direction of Mr. Matt Spradlin (Wilmington schools). Coy had 11 seventh graders and 7 eighth graders participate. There were 22 schools represented from throughout the Miami Valley and about 200 kids in all participated.

- The National History Bee is a competition both Coy and Ankeney participate in every year. This 50 question multiple choice test covers all aspects of history, both internationally and American-any time period. Between Coy and Ankeney, we had a record setting 690 students qualify for this prestigious competition. Congratulations to all those qualified and we wish you the best of luck!
- The ELA department hosted author Brian Wells on Monday, Feb. 25th, as a kick off for Read across America week. Presentations were given throughout the day to each grade level in the commons.

- The Coy Robotics Team did well at their state competition. We won our first match, and improved on our score from last week in the individual portion. The kids had a great time and experience was overall very positive!

Attendance Reminders and How to Access our Attendance Policy
We love seeing our Coy students at school! We understand there are circumstances when your student will have to miss school, but please follow our Attendance Procedures to ensure that you are complying with House Bill 410 to have your student properly excused. Please account for your student every day by emailing or calling the office to notify us of any absences, late arrivals, or early dismissals.
AWESOME A+ Attendance!
A Parent Note =
- An email (coyattendance@gocreek.org)
- A phone call (429.7577)
- A voicemail on our Attendance line (429.7577 option 1)
- An actual note (send in with the child)
You have 10 Parent Notes per year! These are for an EXCUSABLE reason (i.e. illness, medical appointments, funerals, pre-approved out of state travel, observation of a religious holiday, etc.) After you have exhausted your 10 parent notes, a medical note is required to excuse your child from school.
All Medical notes must be received within 3 days of the medical appointment (a medical appointment is still EXCUSABLE with one of your 10 parent notes, but won't be medically excused without an actual note from the medical establishment.)
Please account for your child each and every day if they will not be at school. Call 429.7577 if you child will be tardy, absent, or if they will be leaving school early.
Thank you for your support!
A Note from the Cafeteria
Children need healthy meals to learn. Beavercreek City Schools offers healthy meals every school day. Beavercreek City Schools offer lunch at $2.70 for elementary buildings and $3.00 for the middle schools. Your children may qualify for free meals or for reduced price meals.
Through SPS EZpay, you are able to make school fee payments and lunch account deposits through one online account. Parents may use debit or credit cards via the EZpay link found at: https://www.spsezpay.com/BCmeals/login.aspx
Please call Cindy Steeley at 458-2531 if you have any questions.
