MES NEWS!

News & Notes from Ms. Kapuchuck

November 21, 2021

Dear MES Families,

The Thanksgiving holiday is right around the corner! As this time of year approaches, there are so many things to be thankful for at MES. Here are just a few:

* This past week was a difficult one for many MES families and one of our beloved bus drivers. Many of you reached out to ask how you could help as well as just to say, "I am thinking of everyone impacted." In situations like these, those words mean more than anything. I have loved riding the bus with the children the past few days, just being there to listen and reassure them. As a principal, our children are my number one priority. During this situation, they have demonstrated what it means to be brave, resilient, and empathetic. One of our fifth graders even stepped up as a leader, helping our transportation director learn the route. On the morning news this past week, I shared the following Mr. Rogers quote with the children, "Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping." There aren't enough words to express my gratitude for all of the parents, RCPS Central Office, and Rockingham County community helpers who showed up to support our students and bus driver during this time of need. I am so proud and THANKFUL to be a part of the MES community.

* Thanks to all of you, our first SCHOOL FUNDRAISER in MANY years was an incredible success! We set a goal of selling $5,000 in items and our students and staff tripled that with just over $15,000 in sales! We try our best to make sure your child's learning environment is the absolute best it can be. Thanks to everyone who participated, our teachers will now have the funds to purchase the resources they need to support fun, meaningful learning for all students in their classrooms. Our kids deserve it!

Also, we tripled our goal, so that means we will definitely have human ice cream sundaes!! Stay tuned for more pictures after our outdoor assembly this Monday!

We will send out information about when and where to pick up orders as soon as they arrive. Thank you all SO much for supporting our school!!

* Outdoor lunches were a hit! Thanks to all of you who came to have lunch outside with your child(ren). If you weren't able to come, we hope to have many more opportunities like this in the spring! We are just thankful to give families this opportunity!

* The MES community is the absolute BEST!! So many parents and community members have donated snacks and treats for our staff. Our RCPS teachers and administrators are participating in LETRS, an intensive reading professional learning program, and having these treats handy sure has been awesome! While some teachers and staff aren't participating in LETRS, they certainly have enjoyed these treats as well! In addition to these treats, so many community partners have reached out to me wanting to support our school! Thanks to community partners, our Book Machine was fully funded in a very short time and all of the books for the book machine have been purchased and are at MES awaiting its arrival! Another community partner reached out to me this week wanting to support school projects. We are SO fortunate to have the support of our parents and community!

* We are so thankful that our parent community supports our school! Thank you so much for trusting us to make a difference in the lives of your children each day.

* I am so blessed to be the principal of this incredible school and I am so thankful for your overwhelming support. I care deeply about all of our children and I am 100% committed to making sure every child has the school experience they deserve. If you ever have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to me for assistance. I am here for you!

Have a wonderful week ahead and Happy Thanksgiving!

-Leslie

Spread the Cheer Project!

Let's spread some cheer and kindness to our teachers and staff from now through the month of December! Please take a moment to submit a quick note to any MES staff member to express your appreciation for them. We will print out the messages and add a special treat to them before placing them in mailboxes. MES families are encouraged to submit as many notes as they'd like. It takes each and every staff member giving 100% to keep our school running smoothly each day! I know these words of kindness will mean A LOT!

RCPS COVID-19 & Health Plan Information

You can find the RCPS reopening information by clicking here. You can find the RCPS health plan here.

We continue to follow the same health and safety procedures as last year when it comes to COVID-19. Thank you for understanding that all of our schools in RCPS are following this plan in order to maintain the health and safety of our students and staff. We appreciate your patience, flexibility and understanding as we navigate this "new normal".

As COVID numbers in our area are rising we need to come together as a team to keep our children healthy and safe.

DO NOT SEND YOUR CHILD TO SCHOOL IF:

  • They have to take any medications to make them feel better or reduce fever

  • They have had a fever of 100.4 or higher in the last 24 hours

  • They have a bad cough, sore throat, vomiting, diarrhea, a runny nose that will soil more than 2 masks per day

  • Someone in your household is sick and being tested for COVID

If you think that you have been exposed to COVID, DO NOT send the child to school without consulting the school first.

If you are unsure of household contact or have any questions as to whether or not your child should attend school, please call the office at 540-289-3004 and ask to speak with the school nurse.

Thank you for helping us to keep all of our students and staff safe and healthy!

Breakfast and Lunch is FREE for all students! Menus are below!

Transportation Changes- IMPORTANT!

Any same-day transportation changes during the school year must occur before 1:30pm. Please make sure these are taken care of through the office, rather than contacting the teacher, so that we can ensure your child gets home safely! Often, teachers do not have time to check messages and email during the day, so it is important that these changes are communicated to the office. The office will take care of making sure teachers know of the transportation changes.

Attendance

If you need to contact the office regarding your child's attendance, please call the school at 540-289-3004 or email the school at mesattendance@rockingham.k12.va.us before 8:30 am. Please include the following information in your email:

1. Student Name

2. Teacher Name

3. Reason for Absence

4. The name of the person submitting the email

You can also use this email address to send Dr. notes!
