History
Latin Pop music originates from cultures such as Spain, Italy, Portugal, France, Romania, and Latin America. The stylistic origins are Latin music and Pop rock. In the mid 1960s, Sergio Mendes reached a global audience in Latin Pop music. In the 1970s, Latin Pop music was defined by the romantic music that artists such as Julio Iglesias and Roberto Carlos produced. Latin pop music was affected by production techniques and other styles of music. Tejano music, centered in Texas and the U.S./Mexico border region, began to use synthesizers, slicker production, and added more urban sensibility to other styles such as norteña and conjunto. In the 1980s, there was a rise of Latin Freestyle, which was a club-oriented dance music that was rooted in Latin rhythms but relied on synthesizers and drum machines for most of its arrangements. Both of those styles of music influenced the rise of Latin Pop music, which maintained Latin rhythms in its uptempo numbers but relied on mainstream pop for its more melodic characteristics. Latin Pop music was influenced by artists and groups such as Las Triplets and Gloria Estefan, whose album showed the tropical rhythms from her parents' generation in Cuba.
