A Note from our Principal
Greetings WPA Families,
Fall Festival
Mark your calendars for our Fall Festival! It will be Friday, October 7th, from 4:30-7:30. It is a wonderful way to support the school, meet new people in our community, and enjoy an evening with your family. It is also a wonderful way to get in some volunteer hours. Reach out to our PTO if you are willing to help us out with this delightful event.
School Fees
Under Utah State Law, school fees are eligible for a fee waiver for families who need it. Information on criteria that qualify students for a fee waiver is available here.
New Year, Great Habits
The start of the year is a great time to kick off new habits or get back into old routines. We encourage families to keep reading at the forefront of their minds as they settle into what works for their family this year. Reading with your child is the most powerful way for parents to support their student's education. Reading aloud to your student, having them read to you, and keeping them reading independently ALL have excellent benefits well into Jr high school. This note includes a summary of the many ways reading benefits your student. Check it out!
Class Placement and Beginning of Year Assessments
Placing students in the right classroom environment is an important tool to ensure their individual needs are met. We are proud to be a leading school in South Davis County for student growth. We feel that a combination of classroom placement, robust support programs, and a strong intervention model are a cornerstone of this success. We use a variety of assessments and careful thought and consideration in class placements each year. Still, we recognize that it is normal and expected for students to grow and develop at different rates. One summer can impact growth for a student as well. With that in mind, we start each school year by reassessing students (and again in January) to ensure that our program works for ALL students. While we often get the placement right, there are occasions when we need to change a student’s classroom to meet their needs best. We are always happy to give additional information about class placement. If you have questions regarding your student’s class placement now or throughout the year, please contact Mrs. Pilkington.
Dress Code Reminder
We have had a lot of shoes this year that do not meet the dress code. This is a friendly reminder that open-toed shoes and shoes that light up do not meet our school dress code. You can access the complete dress code or contact the front office with additional questions.
Walking Students to Class
We love seeing parents help students find classes on the first day of school; it sure helps with the first day of school jitters! Now that we are getting more comfortable with our daily routine, we ask that parents foster independence in their children by allowing them to enter the building and walk to class independently.
School Lunch and Reading Support
Did you know that schools get additional support to help students struggling in reading through the Free and Reduced lunch program? It also allows students access to both breakfast and lunch at school. Even if your child brings lunch from home, please take a moment to apply for the program and maximize the support we can offer students.
You can apply here.
School Supplies
You can access the list of recommended school supplies and greatly appreciated donations on our website to jump on back-to-school year shopping early.
Restaurant Night
Our first restaurant night will be August 30th at Handel's Ice Cream in Woods Cross!
More information to come! Mark your calendars!!

PTO NEWS!!
- NEW THIS YEAR: we will no longer be using Helpcounter as a means to log volunteer hours. We are simplifying the logging process by using a google form that you can find HERE. (https://forms.gle/3nimMPP7WUtcaCTEA)
- If you have already logged hours on helpcounter, they will be transferred over, so there is no need to re record hours
- There will soon be a QR code by the office that you can scan to log your hours as you're volunteering. We will also be updating the links on the website, Wednesday note and teacher newsletters to the new form. This may take some time so please be patient.
- The Volunteer tab on the school website is in the process of being updated and will soon contain all of the information you need to volunteer including sign-up links for events! So exciting! Stay tuned...
- The Fall Festival (used be called Fall Fiesta) is looking for donations for the silent auction. This event is our biggest fundraiser for the year and your donations will make it even more successful. If you have something you are willing to donate (lessons, items, tickets, or even just money to buy other big ticket items) contact Gwen Fisher (gwenfisher116@gmail.com)
- Class captains needed! We are still needing people to be class captains for Miss Riley John (2nd grade), Mr. Sim (4th grade), Ms. Gaerte (6th grade), and Mss Spence (6th grade). If you are interested in helping these teachers organize volunteers to do door decorations, field trips, in class help and just get to know the kids better then contact Mara Callister (ashbymara@gmail.com)
- One last thing, if you are new to our school remember to connect with our Facebook groups. links to those can be found on the volunteer tab of the school website. Just look for the red drop down and the shovel that says "Volunteer".
- We are so excited for this new school year! If you have any questions about volunteering or PTO please reach out to me. I am the Volunteer and Communications Chair for the PTO and my name is Kara Hess (karaleigh16@gmail.com).
- We are in need of three more people to chair portions of the Fall Festival. If you are interested, please text Shannon Ray (801-735-4955). This is an incredible way to get a few hours at the beginning of the year! If you can't volunteer time then consider donating to the festival, there is always a need for donations! Shannon can help you with that as well!
