From the Principal
January is here and the cold weather is coming along with it! Please be sure to send students to school with coats, hats, and other cold weather gear that is clearly marked with their name. Also, if you are missing any of these items, be sure to check out lost and found. It gets very full this time of year. We do our best to get students outside and active as much as we can, even in the winter months. Be sure to review our district Winter Weather Recess guidelines below so you know what to expect.
We began a new tradition at Benninghoven last year that we will continue this month! We will celebrate the new year all together on our first day back after winter break! Students are invited to dress for a New Year's party on January 6th! We will get together as a school for a New Year's party assembly in the gym that first morning back. Students can dress up in their fancy party attire, wear party hats and other fun new year's accessories. The purpose of this fun day is to get students excited about returning to school and looking forward to the spring semester. We hope it makes getting them out of bed a little easier on that first day back. :)
This month we will also celebrate Kindness Week as a district! Be on the lookout for a separate email with more details about this soon. Also, if you have a 6th Grade student, you will want to be sure to check out Trailridge All in One Night on January 15th. Your 6th grader will be bringing home information in the coming weeks and you can read more details below. This is a night to learn all about the Wildcat community and prepare for the transition to middle school.
Happy New Year Knights Families!

Trail-A-Bration
Trail – a – bration (All in One Night) is scheduled for January 15th from 6:00- 8:00PM. This student showcase will highlight student learning across content areas! Music concerts, art displays, performances and a book fair will be highlighted.
Sixth grade students and families are invited and encouraged to join the fun and begin getting to know Trailridge. A parent meeting will be held for sixth grade parents at 5:30 in the MPR on the top floor of Trailridge. Please plan to park in the rear of the building (West side). We hope to see many 6th grade families in attendance! If you have further questions, feel free to contact the main office at Trailridge at (913)993-1000

Food Services Update
Did you know what makes a school meal? Students must choose a full portion of at least three of the five components to receive a full school lunch and at least one component must be a 1/2 cup of fruit or vegetable. Components include entrée, grain, fruit, vegetable, and milk. There are unlimited (single trip) fruits and vegetables available, except for juice and potatoes. Please help by encouraging your student to take what they want, but eat what they take in order to reduce waste. Remember milk is offered, but not required to be taken.
Don’t forget – if your child receives free or reduced meals, they are eligible for one breakfast and one lunch per day as part of this benefit. All breakfast and lunch meal choices are available for all students regardless of eligibility status.
The school breakfast menus, lunch menus, and other nutrition information are available on the district’s website at https://www.smsd.org/about/departments/food-service.

Yearbook
Yes, it seems early to be talking about yearbooks….but we need your candid pictures to make the yearbook fun. If you have any pictures of field trips, 1st day of school, carnival, grandparents’ day, Halloween parties, etc. send them via email to Courtney O’Neal at cbhiggins77@hotmail.com. They could end up in the yearbook this spring!

Citizenship Essay Contest
Greetings Benninghoven 5th and 6th Graders!! The Kansas Citizenship Program is seeking 5th and 6th grade written pieces for its Citizenship Contest. This year’s theme is “The Leader in Me”. All 5th and 6th Grade students are eligible to submit a literature piece inspired by the theme. Written pieces can be essay, poetry or even a song or rap! Please review the attached program information and rules for your submissions.
THE DEADLINE TO SUBMIT A PIECE IS JANUARY 8, 2019.
Each entry must relate to the theme and must be the original work of one student only. It will be judged more on how well the piece relates to the topic than on the technicalities of the writing itself. Help from other students or adults is not allowed.
PLEASE SUBMIT YOUR WRITING AND THE ATTACHED FORM, FILLED OUT IN ITS ENTIRETY, INCLUDING FINAL WORD COUNT, NO LATER THAN WEDNESDAY JANUARY 8, 2020, to Beverly Weber, PTA Citizenship Chair, bmw@martinleigh.com.
Winning submissions from Benninghoven will be submitted to the Regional Shawnee Mission PTA no later than January 11, 2020 for a chance to be selected for the state winning pieces! This could be a great winter break activity!
