Language Arts- Ms. Waxman
In language arts:
This week we will start the week off with a Reading Inventory checkpoint. Students who were with us at the beginning of the year have already completed one of these checks, which we have been using to guide their reading instruction. I'm looking forward to seeing the data on growth that many students are definitely experiencing.
Radio broadcasts scripts should be finalized this week, and a copy shared with me. Our presentations of these will begin the week after our break. Our novel's plot is just getting started, but we have already seen Emma Edmonds transition into Private Franklin Thompson. Our author Seymour Reit has a wonderful knack for leaving us hanging at the end of each chapter wanting to hear more...a sign of a great writer! Students are working on pulling pieces of the text that demonstrate some of our literary techniques, things they don't understand or find interesting. These "annotations" are being worked on in a google document, and will be turned in every 4 chapters. Part one, chapters 1-4, will be due this week along with a summary for each chapter. Ask your child if you can take a look at theirs.
A big thank you to those of you who signed and returned the orange slips about your child's reading homework. I have seen greater participation this week. If you did not receive this, either your child is right on track, or they chose not to share it with you...PowerSchool will quickly tell you either way! Book 2 of the Independent (Choice) Reading for 2nd quarter is due by this Thursday, November 17th. There are already a number of students who have already completed this, while others have not completed Book 1! Please take a minute to touch base with your student to see how they are coming...most just need to get through their first book successfully to see the benefits of this practice. Students have been asked to bring their books to school with them daily this quarter. We will focus part of our school time to this valuable practice, but this will not exclude the need for them to be reading at home. TweenTribune is due by Friday afternoon.
Have a great week!
