First Grade is One in a Minion!
Happy December! The next 2 weeks are going to fly by! Here is all the info you need to know to get us to Christmas Break!!!!!!
- SECRET SANTA - Our day to visit the Secret Santa shop is Wednesday. Please indicate on the green flyer that came home today who your child is to buy for. This helps our elves assist in the gift giving process. If you forget to send money on Wednesday, the make up day is Thursday! This is so much fun for the kids! Please see below.
With the Christmas season upon us, we will be doing our annual SVDP Secret Santa Shop! This is always a favorite and fun activity of the students!
The Shop will be open this Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, December 5-7! Your child will be coming home with a flyer on Monday with more details about this event. All students will get an opportunity to shop for fun gifts for members of their immediate family! Parents can write down a list for their children as well as a budget for them. Cash or check will be accepted! Below is a schedule of when classes will be shopping this week:
Tuesday, December 5 - Pre K, 2nd, 3rd and 6th
Wednesday, December 6- 1st, 4th, and 7th
Thursday, December 7 – K, 5th, and 8th
- Holiday Celebrations Around the World - The First Grade will be spending the next two weeks traveling around the world to learn about many countries and the many traditions each country partakes in to celebrate a holiday important to their culture. We have created passports as well as a travel portfolio to write in and collect our souvenirs. Unfortunately, we only have two weeks...so we are trying to make it to 10 countries before our time is up and we head on break to partake in our own traditions. The classroom receives a package each day from our traveling friend Globe Trot Scott. In this package their can be books to read, souvenirs to make, fact sheets to read and even a link to a slide show and video. I need some help for a few of the activities...I need empty soup cans and toilet paper tubes for next weeks activities. If you have any of these, please send them with your child:) Thank you! Today we visited Germany, and the kids were so enthralled and excited to learn about it. Ask your child each day....Hopefully they can share a thing or two with you!
- Spelling Lists - There will be no spelling lists for the next two weeks. We will be focusing our efforts on our travel around the world to learn about how other families and countries celebrate holidays. Spelling will resume after break.
- Book order -The book order has been placed for December. If you ordered books, I will send them home discreetly as a package for you in an unmarked envelope or we can make arrangements to pick them up the night of the Christmas program!
Book it – Don't forget December Book It is due by the 16th. For the 2nd month in a row every child participated! WHOOP WHOOP! This is the first year for 100% participation!!!! Please encourage your child to decorate the gift boxes on the paper before returning to school! Let's do it again for December, too!
Family Project - In your child's folder on Friday was a family traditions project for you and your child to work on together. This project is due to be returned by Monday, December 11th. An email with all information about it should have come home on Friday. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me! I look forward to hearing about the many traditions!
Christmas program - ANNUAL CHRISTMAS PROGRAM All of our learners will participate in our Christmas Music Program on Thursday, December 14. Learners should report to their classrooms at 6:30 p.m., the program will begin at 7:00 p.m. Our gym doors will open at 6:30 and cocoa and cookies will be available for family and friends as we wait for the show to begin!
HURRICANE HELP DRESS-DOWN on Wednesday December 6th Our 3rd, 4th, and 5th-grade classes are trying to help St. Paul’s Catholic School in Jacksonville, Florida. This school lost their gym and all of their gym equipment during Hurricane Irma. The theme of the dress-down day will be sports, so for a $1 donation, learners can wear sports shirts, CYO jerseys, jeans, sweatpants, etc.
Advent Wreath and calendar - Hopefully you took notice of the Advent Calendars and wreath that came home in your child's folder. Our 6th grade class is leading our school in learning about the Advent season and provided every family in the school with a paper wreath to make and use at home. Please be sure to check your child's folder and utilize the materials we take the time to provide. Jesus is the reason for the season and it is important that they not only learn this at school, but continue in that journey with their family at home.
SVDP SPIRIT WEAR Our Community Council has teamed up with Richie’s Sporting Goods to provide spirit wear for our learners and families. All orders are placed online until December 10 - with items to be delivered before Christmas!
CHRISTMAS PARTY - We will be celebrating our way to Christmas break with a small celebration on Friday the 16th. Tracy Deitrick is leading the charge with organizing a fun and simple party.
PLEASE JOIN US SVDP will be hosting a very special visitor on December 7. Mr. Matt Fafrak, who is a Catholic retreat leader, music minister, and speaker will be here to help us get into the spirit of Advent. Our K-8 learners will love his presentation and all of our parents, grandparents, and friends are invited to join us. This Advent Prayer Retreat will take place in the gym from 2:00-2:50 p.m.
At this time of year, I am always so grateful for all that I have in my life. I love that my job is spending time and challenging the minds of your wonderful children. They are truly a blessing and keep me grounded to remember the simple things in life are important! They grow up way to fast (Louis is turning 18 tomorrow!), so cherish every moment!!!
Best wishes for a happy and healthy holiday season!

MATH
For the first part of our school year, the main focus of our GO MATH program is addition and subtraction. We learn about the many ways we can find an answer, including using manipulatives, using a hundreds chart, drawing a picture, mental math, using a number line, making a tens frame, even using our fingers. Not every strategy will work best for your child, but we learn the many different ways so your child can experience and discover the best way for them to be a STEM problem solver.
We will also continue to work on graphing, number sequence, skip counting and shapes (3-D and 2-D) throughout other areas of instruction, TOO:)
