Summer Reading Opportunities!
Summer Reading Learning Packs!
Expanding knowledge also expands children’s language comprehension, vocabulary, and reading abilities. That’s why the Toledo Lucas County Public Library offers convenient learning packs.
Learning packs offer a few topic-specific, librarian-selected fiction and nonfiction books as well as enrichment activities printed from Scholastic Teachables. Make this week’s reading plan a little easier; pick up a learning pack from your nearest location.
Summer Reading Opportunities through Lucas County!
Keep your students reading all summer with the Library! Earn fun and free incentives for reading. Students may participate individually and can also register as part of your summer school or camp.
Summer schools and camps can also schedule to attend Children’s Library programs, take a field trip to the Library, or request a visit from a librarian. For more information email or call 419.259.5231.
We have a great toolkit of resources you can share to get your students signed up and ready to go!
Project Prairie Programming with the Toledo Zoo!
The Educators from the Toledo Zoo provided inquiry based programming to all of our students this week. Each classroom spent time in the prairie investigating and exploring different aspects of the science curriculum. Our Kindergarten students explored living and non-living things in the prairie. The First graders were botanists and learned about plant needs. Our Second graders compared bug populations inside and outside the prairie. The Third graders designed bird feeders to find out which food birds prefer. Finally, our Fourth graders explored signs of erosion in the prairie. Thank you again for the financial support from our families during our fundraising efforts and WPA that have provided such an incredible outdoor classroom and learning space for all students.

Bike to School - Next Wednesday!
The Waterville Police Department will be hosting a Bike to School Day on the morning of May 17th, starting at 8 AM. The bike route will be led by the Waterville Police Department. We kindly ask that all students and parents wishing to ride, stage at 8 AM at Prairie Park on Royal Hampton Ln and Buckeye Dr. We will be offering one route this spring, which is about one block longer than our previous shorter bike route. Waterville PD officers will be riding with and escorting our students from the Prairie Park lot to the rear of the school.
Students will exit their bicycles and walk them down the sidewalk to the rear parking lot of the school. We will assemble for a large group picture and then students will bring their bikes to the front of the school. Hopefully, this eliminates a little of the car traffic and makes it safer for the students upon arrival. Officers will be there to line up the riders that would like to participate.
We are looking forward to a safe and successful Bike to School event and as the May date approaches, we will be sending out more information.

News from our School Counselor, Mrs. Cowell
Teila and I have been having so much fun making our final rounds of classroom counseling lessons for the school year this month! So far, we have been to 4th Grade, 3rd Grade, and 1st Grade classrooms. Depending on grade level, students are participating in age appropriate end of the year reflection activities. Also, in each grade level, each student has taken the time to write a personal (or academic) goal for themselves to work on over the summer or next school year. I am so impressed with our students and their ability to accurately self reflect and to set truly meaningful goals for themselves that will set them up for future success! I honestly think we have the most amazing students ever! I am also so thankful for our families and for all of your collaboration and support throughout the school year!
Students of the Quarter!
Congratulations to this round’s Student of the Quarter winners! These students entered their Bucket Filling slips in the Bucket Filling Store at the end of March and were selected to be highlighted on our Student of the Quarter bulletin boards next to the cafeteria. They have done a wonderful job throughout the school year displaying Respect, Responsibility, Safety, and Kindness/Bucket Filling. We are so thankful to have so many wonderful students to recognize throughout the year! Congratulations to:
Greyson Abbey
Santiago Mendoza
Sadie Widman
Hadley Hutt
Cullen Neary
We are so excited to highlight one of our 1st Graders, Kylie Stout! Kylie submitted a poem for the Ode to the Zip Code contest and was chosen as one of the 15 finalists. All of the finalists were invited to present their poems to a panel of judges. After presenting her poem, Kylie was then selected as a 3rd place winner and earned a $150 Visa gift card! Congratulations, Kylie!!!

Camp Invention!
Waterville Primary School Announces Camp Invention's Return:
There's no doubt, Anthony Wayne students are passionate about science and engineering. We are excited to announce that once again, Waterville Primary School will serve as a host site for this year's event. This year's programming will last four days, June 26-29th. Each camp day runs from 8:30 am - 4:30 pm. If you have any questions, please contact Miss Knoll or Mr. Beakas for additional information.
Great Wall of Grit!
The importance of helping a child learn to commit to something long term, persevering when faced with obstacles, and the willingness to keep trying- even when a task or goal is challenging, is our continued focus at Waterville Primary. Grit and growth mindset is not an “edu-fad” but dispositions we will encourage and intentionally teach all of our students, through different classroom activities, assignments, literature, role models, real world examples, and conversations about the topic.
We really need your help again this year with continuing to provide examples of our very own students and ways that they have shown commitment to an activity or goal. You all did a great job recognizing our gritty students and staff last school year and we need to continue to recognize some new students as the school year begins.
Our “Waterville’s Great Wall of Grit” bulletin board remains hanging in the hallway across from the kitchen. This display showcases our gritty students and staff that have been nominated by other individuals as examples of strivers-students who have an enduring passion and take action to achieve a goal. We will continue to spotlight our students and staff who have both determination and direction.
At the end of this Friday Flyer you will find a nomination form to complete if you would like to nominate a student or staff member here at Waterville Primary that you feel exemplifies Grit. Please turn them into the school office once completed and make sure to check out the “Great Wall of Grit” next time you are here in the school.
Follow Waterville Primary on Twitter!
Waterville Primary will be continuing our presence on Twitter with the handle @AWLSWA. This medium is used for both sharing daily activities and any potential alerts for our building. Here is all it takes to sign up to receive SMS text messages from the Waterville Twitter account when a tweet is posted:
On the phone to receive the messages, simply create a new text message to phone number 40404. Next, the message to be sent should read: follow @awlswa
That’s all there is to it! Any student or parent that follows this procedure will receive any Waterville school Twitter messages to their phone as an SMS text message.
To turn off text messages, you would send a message to 40404 that reads: off @awlswa
