Elmwood News (9/23/19)
Week of 9/23--9/27
Message from Principal Polomsky
Elmwood Parents & Community~
The Back to School Carnival, held last Friday was a HUGE success and we also lucked out with beautiful fall weather for the evening. If you weren’t able to attend, we hope you can make it out next year as so much fun is had at this annual event with carnival games, crafts, food vendors, amazing raffle baskets and silent auction items … just to name a few of the highlights from the event.
This event has become one of my new favorites at Elmwood as it’s a wonderful way to come together as a community to enjoy time with family and friends; while also supporting Elmwood.
Let’s remember, this night wouldn’t have happened without our amazing volunteers! A huge shout out to Aimee & Michael Rodgers for taking the lead on this event, to our amazing Home & School Board and to every parent, grandparent & older sibling who also came out to volunteer. Events such as this wouldn’t happen without YOU.
Thank you for #MakingADifference for the kids at Elmwood!
Lisa

Watch D.O.G.S.
If you were not able to secure a Watch D.O.G.S date, there are several ways to volunteer at Elmwood. Upcoming activities include Fun Run, Movie Night, Book Fair, School Garden, Rock Climbing and Field Day (spring). If you want to volunteer, please sign up: HERE. Movie night and rock climbing volunteer information will be distributed separately via Talk203 when available.
If you’d like to be added to the Watch D.O.G.S. wait list please email Megan Warty at meganwarty@gmail.com. Please include your name, child(ren)’s name, grade and teacher(s).
If you secured a volunteer date, you below are program reminders. All of this information was included on SignUpGenius and will also be emailed to participants.
- SignUpGenius will send a reminder email one week prior to your volunteer date to the email address you provided.
- Please notify Megan Warty at meganwarty@gmail.com as soon as possible if you have a conflict with your volunteer date. You are not guaranteed another date, but we will try our best to help facilitate a change with another dad/father-figure.
- Do NOT switch dates with another dad without notifying Megan Warty. Elmwood customizes each dad/father-figure’s schedule. We must provide the school at least 48 hours’ notice of any changes to make certain the school and classroom teacher can accommodate as well.
- T-Shirts: All volunteers will wear a Watch D.O.G.S. t-shirt during their time at school. The school has a limited number of t-shirts available for volunteers, but to purchase your own shirt and/or a shirt for your child, click here.
- HAVE FUN!!! Watch D.O.G.S are superstars at Elmwood – enjoy the day!

This year, Elmwood will continue to use DirectorySpot, for our school directory! You will still be able to access the school directory right from your smartphone or desktop and it will always be updated with the latest information! Additional Flyers & Information
Reminders
Crossing Guard- Gartner and Modaff
Ms. Karen Stohner has been our Crossing Guard at the corner of Modaff and Gartner for the past several years. She is there at arrival and dismissal helping cross our kids safely in that very tricky intersection. The Elmwood office has received a few phone calls from neighbors in our community who are concerned about students and parents who have been attempting to cross diagonally across the intersection, even with Karen's reminders. Crossing diagonally is unsafe and against the law. Karen is working diligently to remind everyone to stay in the marked white cross walks. She is only one person, manning a very busy corner, so everyone's cooperation and patience is important.
The district would like to hire one more person to work at this corner alongside Karen. If you are interested, please contact the district office. The hours are every school day 7:45-8:15 and 2:30-3:00.
Club FLARE for 4th & 5th Grade Girls
Elementary school is a critical time in all students’ lives, whether the child is male or female. However, studies have emphasized that female rates of aggressive behavior toward their peers is rising at a rapid rate. Results of Naperville District 203’s survey in the spring of 2007 demonstrated that many parents and students were concerned about the aggressive forms of relationships taking place in school. Elmwood School developed a girls’ club entitled Club FLARE (Friends Learning And Respecting Everyone) in an effort to assist female students in developing an understanding of these “bullying” types of behaviors. An additional goal is to provide students with problem solving and decision making skills to handle relational aggression scenarios. This club will take place every Tuesday morning before school at 7:25 in the Elmwood Eagle’s Lair, located by the 5th grade classrooms. A formal “membership” is not expected, however, I would like to have an idea of how many girls to expect for our first session on Tuesday, October 1st. Flyer with more information and permission slip

ECO Trash Fundraiser
Are your trash bins stinky and full of bacteria after a long, hot summer? You’re in luck! Elmwood has teamed up with Eco Trash Bin Clean for a fundraiser. They will use industrial strength equipment to steam your bins with 190 degree water, disinfect them and leave them smelling great. For every cleaning appointment in the month of September, Eco will donate $5 to Elmwood Home&School. Find the FLYER HERE To schedule your cleanup, text the word EAGLES along with the name of your city to 630-415-5768. You will receive a reply with all the information you need to complete the scheduling process. It’s super easy - just leave your cans at the curb on your scheduled day and come home to clean, sweet-smelling cans. The cost is only $30 for 2 cans or $35 for 3. Please share this on your local Facebook groups and pages, and with your Chicagoland friends and family. The more cleanings we have scheduled with our code, the more money we will raise for Elmwood. One local elementary school earned $1065 with this fundraiser - let’s see if we can beat that!

Box Top Information
The Box Tops for Education program is changing the way we can earn cash for our school! Going forward, instead of clipping from packages and checking expiration dates, all Box Tops will be earned digitally by scanning your receipt using the Box Tops mobile app for your smartphone. **If you still have traditional Box Tops clips at home, please make sure to send them to school!** We will still earn cash for all clipped Box Tops until they expire. Better yet, you can “double dip” during the packaging transition by clipping traditional Box Tops AND scanning your store receipt containing participating products. Be sure to download the new Box Tops mobile app for your smartphone and learn more at: BTFE.com
