4th Graders Skype with a Hurricane Specialist
Our fourth graders have been reading about the effects of nature on our lives. They read a story about a storm chaser who photographed the destruction of Hurricane Andrew both during and after the storm. After reading the story, the classes had many discussions about hurricanes, especially Hurricane Sandy.
As a special treat, the classes had a Skype session with Dr. Michael Brennan of the National Hurricane Center in Miami. (He happens to be Mrs. May’s cousin.) The students were able to talk with a real hurricane specialist from the comfort of their classroom. What a wonderful 21st century learning experience!
PTG
VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT
From Kristen:
I have been a Bedminster Elementary School parent for the past 10 years. I can’t believe how quickly the time has gone by and that this is my last year at Bedminster. In 2005, I started to get involved by attending the monthly PTG meetings. I wanted to be more informed about what was occurring in the school. As I attended these meetings, I began to see opportunities where I could use my time, my skill-set, and my educational background to partner with the Bedminster staff in my childrens’ education. I love kids, and I love education! Volunteering has given me the chance to foster that love. I really enjoyed being able to spend time helping the students, getting to know my kids’ friends, working with the Bedminster staff, and working with other parents to make Bedminster a community where all the children had wonderful experiences to learn and grow. Over the years I have been a homeroom mom, a tutor, a lunch duty mom, a member of the PTG Executive Board, a chair-person of several committees such as the Holiday Shop, the Fifth Grade Farewell, and the Race for Education. It has been rewarding to know that I have played a small part in helping so many children have a positive elementary school experience. However, the relationships that I developed over the years as a result of being active in the PTG have been the most meaningful aspect of volunteering!
