Counselor Corner - Sue Ritchey
Here we are! The last week of May 2020! Seniors are finished with all of their course work and the Juniors are happily taking over the “Senior Status”! I hope you are able to take in some of these nice, warm days and focus on the positive things. Did you know that SUNSHINE boosts levels of serotonin, the body's natural happy hormone? That is why we tend to feel happier and more energetic when the sun shines. Regular sun can stave off moderate depression, particularly if combined with exercise, such as a walk in the park. It has also been shown that exercising outdoors creates more endorphins in the body than exercising indoors.
I also hope that you are able to spend some time, while practicing safe measures, with a few friends and family. Gathering in person with my family was the best medicine for me this weekend. Research shows that spending time with friends and family makes a big difference when it comes to happiness. Social time is especially important for happiness –even for introverts. Studies have proven that the amount of time spent with friends and family –goes a long way towards boosting happiness – even more so than an increased income!
Stay safe and healthy, and as always, let me know if I can help you with advising, or counseling! Sue.ritchey@lisd.us

Thriving in the Pandemic - Gary Cripe, School Social Worker
Here are some tips for important aspects of lifestyle that can help lead to good balanced health:
Sleep: keep your bedroom at a cooler temperature if at all possible. Some people prefer to use fans, even in the winter time, for the cooler temperature and as a form of white noise (blocking out other sounds).
Exercise: Try to work on your balance regularly. Challenge yourself to stand on each foot, with your other leg bent behind you, for 1 minute. Walk across a log or narrow piece of wood. Yoga exercises often incorporate balance.
Good Nutrition: Use your time at home to practice cooking skills. Cooking more meals at home can promote weight loss and healthy eating. This also allows you to experiment with new, healthy ingredients and just have fun.
Attitude: Your mind and what you believe are powerful things. Avoid building on thoughts or forming beliefs that can catch you in self-defeating thinking traps. These are some common distorted thinking traps: 1. All or none thinker: “I have no friends” 2. The repeater: “It happened once so it will happen again” 3. The avoider: “Since I feel so scared, something bad is going to happen” 4. Walking with blinders: only seeing the negative and overlooking the good in a situation.
Mindfulness: mindfulness is about taking moments throughout your day to be more aware of and tuned in to what is going on in those moments. What you see, what you hear, what you smell, what you feel, what you think.
Relaxation: Find comfortable/calming places to use as a relaxation oasis. Take a walk in the woods. Lie on the beach. Or just use your bedroom! Practice relaxation exercises you know or just do some deep breathing and pay special notice to nature’s sounds and smells.
Socialization: As businesses and parks open back up, please remember that we are not out of the woods yet with this virus. Continue to use social distancing and a mask. If you think you may have been exposed to someone who was sick, then it would be wise to quarantine. Keep yourself, your friends, and your family well.

Do you have personal items at the TECH Center? Do you have items that need to be returned to your instructor
We want to start the process of returning students’ personal items and gathering TECH Center items. Each program has been assigned a date for pick up/return of items. We are asking parents to pick up/drop off items between 3 – 6 pm. Students may not pick up/return these items per the E.O. Parents will pull into the bus loop and pull up to the designated area. Parents will not get out of their cars, but pull up and roll down their passenger side window. We will hand them the items while wearing gloves and face masks. The same process will happen at the CSF. Parents will pull in to the campus, make the loop stopping at a designated area.
