Notes from Your UC Merced Library Liaison
Wrapping Up & Looking Ahead
I hope you all had a great fall semester. This UC Merced Library news update features the Zoom recording and supplemental materials from the Open Faculty Forum on Elsevier Journal Negotiations; the spring call for submitting supplemental course reading and AV materials requests; and the spring call for research instruction.
As always, you can reach me by emailing ldavis23@ucmerced.edu or calling 209.285.7742. I'm here through Friday, December 21st. I will return to the Library on Monday, January 7th.
Have a Happy New Year!
Open Faulty Forum on Elsevier Journal Negotiations: Recording Available Now
In mid-November, the Office of the Vice Provost for Faculty, the Senate Committee on Library and Scholarly Communications (LASC), and the UC Merced Library held the Faculty Open Forum on Elsevier Journal Negotiations.
The recording and supplemental materials are now available. Because UC-Elsevier negotiations are ongoing, these materials are confidential. The following links direct to files in Box.
Submit Your Supplemental Course Materials Requests
Did you know that you can make supplemental course reading and audio-visual materials available to your students through Canvas?
The Library's Course Resources service makes course-related materials available to your students. The service includes locating and scanning materials and then posting the materials to CatCourses. Electronic materials are made available to your students through CatCourses, while print materials are made available at the Library for a two-hour loan period.
The Library also offers digitization services for AV materials, including eligible DVDs. Audio and video content digitized by the Library is made available in CatCourses through the Kaltura Canvas tool.
Requests for materials submitted on or before the priority deadline of Wednesday, December 19, 2018, will be filled by the first day of spring instruction. Requests submitted after the priority deadline will be processed in the order they are received and may not be available until after the first day of instruction.

Submit Your Research Instruction Requests
As the public health liaison, my goal is to encourage and move research instruction from a more mechanical focus into one that helps students engage more deeply with using sources to solve information needs.
The Research and Learning Services librarians do their best work by collaborating with faculty members to identify measurable learning outcomes and create and facilitate learning activities for students to do in class. In addition to classroom teaching, we can build research guides that students can use to help them as they research on their own. We can also utilize existing and/or develop online Canvas modules and other online tutorials that students can do in advance of in-person instruction and/or at key points throughout the semester.
I can do much of this planning in the weeks leading up to the beginning of the spring semester. Here is an example of a guide, module, tutorial, and video I have used in research instruction to give you an idea of the kinds of online learning materials I can build and/or repurpose.
- PH 103 (research guide)
- Finding and Selecting Databases (Canvas module)
- Finding Empirical Articles in PsycINFO (online Guide on the Side tutorial)
- Tips for Effective Search Strategies (YouTube video)
