Connors Class Learning Activities
Kindergarten
Ms. Fleischer, Ms. Watson, Mrs. Schain, Ms. Bartolotti, Mrs. White, Ms. Romanowski and Mr. Donovan
Math: This week we wrapped unit 6 investigation 2. Students created subtraction monsters and reviewed story problems. Kindergartners played various games during math workshop such as Roll and Record 3, Build and Remove, addition practice, and subtraction color by the code. We are ready for our math assessment next week!
ELA: It has been such a fun week in ELA! Our phonics focus this week was the letter Uu and we have mastered the short /u/ sound! This sight word this week was have and for. Kindergarteners did an AMAZING job on their spelling test this week! It must have been luck from the Leprechaun, who visited all of our classrooms. We also read the story Zoo Borns and discussed facts from the story and our opinion on the story. We thought all the baby animals were extremely cute! We look forward to another wonderful week of learning next week.
1st Grade
Ms. Sheridan, Ms. Klag, Ms. Vayda, Ms. White and Ms. Stinson
Math: This week students have been working on solving problems with the unknown change. Students have been answering equations such as 5 + __= 8 by using pictures, manipulatives, or counting on/counting back strategies to find the missing number. This week students wrote St Patrick's Day themed story problems that match the strategy already given. Students did their best on their unit 5 investigations assessment. We are looking forward to reviewing for the upcoming Linkit assessment, which takes place in April.
ELA: This week our essential question was, "What insects do you know? How are they alike and different?" Students worked in their Reading/Writing Companion books to record vocabulary words related to our question. When reading, "Creep Low, Fly High" we focused on identifying different problems and solutions in the story. We also discussed point of view. We used context clues to determine the way a character feels in the story. Students also learned a narrator can be a character in the story and may use words I, me, and my or the narrator can be a speaker outside the story and use characters' names and words like he, his, and they. We also read, "Hi! Fly Guy" and used clues from the pictures and text to show how the characters are feeling. Our phonics skill this week was on long ie, igh, and y words. Our new high frequency words were: caught, flew, know, laugh, listen, and were. In grammar we focused on inflectional endings. In Writers' Workshop, we are working on poems. This week students wrote acrostic poems related to spring. They were all so creative and did a great job!
Social Studies: This week was an exciting week. We discussed Saint Patrick's Day. We talked about what a shamrock is and what it is called in Ireland. We discussed a famous meal that people eat on Saint Patrick's Day, which was Corned Beef and Cabbage. We thought of all the reasons that we are lucky this year. We then wrote and drew this in a four leaf clover. We continued discussing important and powerful women for Women's History Month. We learned all about Michelle Obama. The children learned that she is Barack Obama’s wife, which made her the First Lady. They also learned that she encouraged healthy eating and exercise for children. We continued talking about our state. We learned the importance of state symbols. We discussed New Jersey’s state symbols which included the state bird, flower, flag, and more. Then we played a little matching game as a class and got to practice ourselves.
2nd Grade
Ms. Garcia, Ms. Rinaldi, Ms. Pokorny, Ms. Criqui and Ms. Romanowski
ELA: This week during ELA our second graders continued to learn about author's purpose while reading expository texts. We read "Volcanoes" and we identified the author's purpose which was to inform the readers using cause and effect. We practiced text features such as bold print, headings, and titles. The phonics focus for this week was r-controlled vowels: eer, ere, ear.
Math: This week in math second graders wrapped up their unit on Data. We continued to work with numerical data and line plots this week to close out the second investigation in the unit. We played a fun review game to prepare for our test on Thursday. Students rocked their math test and had fun doing St. Patrick’s Day activities on Friday!
Social Studies: This week in social studies, we continued educating ourselves about the internet. We learned about being good digital citizens, which means we must be safe and responsible online. All of our classes took a pledge to be a good digital citizen! We also learned about what it means to give credit for other people's work because giving credit is a sign of respect. We now know that by listing the author, title, and website, we can give credit in our schoolwork for the content we use and find online.
Women's History: We conducted research on important women by reading non fiction books on Epic, writing a few sentences of major accomplishments, and creating a stamp in honor of both Dr. Mae Jemison and Amelia Earhart. We presented our findings to the class and learned so much about these women!
3rd Grade
Ms. Januse, Ms. Hall, Ms. Schmidt, Ms.Criqui, Ms. Layson, Ms. Goodwin, Ms. White
and Ms. Stinson
ELA: This week, the students were excited to finish the last three chapter of our core novel, Real Stories From My Time in the Underground Railroad. The students utilized text features, illustrations, and text evidence to analyze the text. They practiced identifying main idea and key details, and used this to reflect, connect, and share their thinking about the book. Lastly, students reviewed important skills such as prefixes, suffixes, text features, and story structure through various Saint Patrick’s Day activities.
Math: After completing Unit 5 this week, students worked to Unlock the Rainbow on Friday, by participating in a game that involved rotating centers and reviewed new and old skills. Students had to "unlock" each challenge in the game by solving problems about 3 digit addition and subtraction, naming fractions, comparing fractions and fractions on a number line.
Social Studies: This week students continued our celebration of Women’s History Month, celebrating the lives of some extraordinary women! Students explored Mother Teresa’s life of service, compassion, and love. Third graders learned about one of the most revolutionary women in science, Mae Jemison. We honored the impactful and brave life of Anne Frank, as well as Frida Kahlo’s influence on art and her life of resilience. We wrapped up the week focusing on the history of St. Patrick’s Day!
Third Grade Thrills: This week the Connors's 3rd grade basketball team played in the championship basketball game, and we were able to celebrate their success this season at our basketball parade on Friday! We are so proud of our third grade basketball stars. Congratulations on an amazing season. It was so fun watching and cheering you on!
4th Grade
Ms. Rodriguez, Ms. Schulz, Ms. Goodwin, Ms. Layson and Mr. Donovan
ELA: Phenomenal 4th Graders are enjoying our next core novel "Jim and Me" by Dan Gutman. The story is a mix of fantasy, historical fiction, and narrative non-fiction. The main character, Stosh, travels back in time to help his classmate meet his great-grandfather, disgraced athlete Jim Thorpe. The goal is to read a chapter each day, with students writing a journal entry in response to the events.
Math: Phenomenal 4th Grade Mathematicians continued their study of decimals and fractions. This week students worked on adding and subtracting mixed numbers and decimals. Students then learned how to multiply fractions by a whole number. Students loved being challenged in math!
Science: This week students researched and investigated how fossils were formed! They then created a model of various fossils that formed in the ocean. After creating their cast models, students went on to list details about the fossils.
5th Grade
Ms. Ortiz, Ms. Schultes, Ms. Rodriguez, Ms. Layson and Ms. Hirniak
Math: In Math, we continued our unit on fractions. This week students learned how to divide fractions by whole numbers and how to divide whole numbers by fractions. We also learned how to create models to demonstrate our mathematical equations. Students have also begun reviewing for NJSLA. Through data analysis, we determined the deficient strands and students have been working on those strands during ILP and Math
ELA: This week in ELA, 5th graders continued working on Unit 4, and finishing up the unit. During this unit we have been reading our core novel, The Watsons Go to Birmingham. Students especially loved the humor throughout this novel. We're looking forward to how it ends next week! In addition, we finished up Unit 4 of Reading Wonders by looking at poetry. We focused on the theme of the poems, as well as the rhythmic meter. Next week we will be focusing on our Link It standards to help prepare us for the upcoming Link It testing (the week of 4/3) Keep it up, 5th grade!
Social studies: This week in Social Studies we celebrated Irish American Month. We learned about the sports and music that is from Ireland. We also learned that the celebration of St. Patrick's started in Boston and it has become largely an American holiday to celebrate Irish pride. Students listened to Irish books through our classroom virtual library and were able to use QR codes to look up Irish History.
Science: This week in 5th grade science, students began their robotics and automation unit. Students explored a robotics website where they were able to discover various types of robots and their functions. Students then had the opportunity to work in groups to develop a short presentation about the robots they studied. Afterwards, students will then be able to share what they learned with the rest of the class in order to expand everyone's knowledge of robotics.
Ms. Criqui's Class
ELA- This week in ELA, students continued to practice reading and writing words that contain r controlled vowels. The main focus was on words that contain ere, eer and ear. For example, deer, here and spear. Students also worked on listening to the story “Volcanoes” and identifying the author’s purpose. As students learned, the author’s purpose is to either persuade, inform or entertain. In honor of Women’s History Month, students researched some famous women and wrote about their accomplishments. Lastly, students reread and edited their realistic fiction stories.
Math- This week in math, students spent a lot of time reviewing previously taught materials in order to prepare for their unit 4 assessment. Students practiced how to read/interpret data and how to make different graphs. Students worked with pictographs, bar graphs and line graphs. Additionally, students learned how to answer questions based on the data. They focused on how to answer questions such as, “which sport got the most votes,” “which sport got the least votes,” and “how many more people voted for soccer than basketball.”
Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth
On Mondays - Wednesdays during the Individualized Learning Pathway (ILP) period, students who have qualified to participate in the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth (CTY) programming engage in a wide array of math course offerings that address their specific strengths and interests. Johns Hopkins CTY believes in researching and advancing ways to identify and nurture academically talented learners. CTY furthers research, guides educators and families and inspires students from diverse communities and backgrounds to pursue their intellectual passions and create the world of tomorrow. This week, we would like to highlight one of the CTY courses offered to our Hoboken students this winter:
CTY - Scratch Programming for Elementary School Students
CTY students begin this course with an introduction to fundamental programming concepts alongside other young CTY students as they learn Scratch, a graphical programming language developed at MIT. Through this course they’ll learn how to create animations, computer games, and interactive projects using Scratch, and put their new skills to use developing a computer game to share with their CTY instructor and classmates. No previous programming skills are required for this course, but students should be comfortable using a computer and browser as well as managing files. We can’t wait to see what amazing projects our CTY students create with the Scratch program!

Women’s History Month - Amelia Earhart
Travelers in First Grade are celebrating Women’s History Month! This week they studied about Amelia Earhart - a first woman aviator who has mysteriously disappeared while flying around the Earth on her way crossing the Pacific Ocean. After viewing an educational video about Earhart, reading a text from Get Epic!, and holding a conversation about her, travelers put all of the knowledge to work. They used text to complete the activity called Leaving a “Stamp” on History. They had to complete the activity with her birthday, hometown, famous for, contributions, fun fact, she deserves to be featured on a U.S. postage stamp because, and then draw a picture of Amelia Earhart. It was a busy working period in 1st Grade!
G2
Passport To The World - Me On The Map
The Geographers in Second Grade continue their journey around the world. This time around they focus on where they are located and what they are surrounded by with a project called Me On The Map. After the study of the continent of North America and having a background knowledge of the city and the state in which they live it, geographers will work on the project which centers around finding themselves on the map of Earth. They will draw a picture and write fact(s) about the following: city, county, state, country, and continent along with a cover page. Then, they will turn this project into a flip book and share their final outcome of the project with their classmates. Way to go, Geographers!

In addition, in each unit, students will get to pick a project to work on and then share it with the global pen pals. This week, they are diving into the activities, after reviewing the importance of digital citizenship and writing skills to successfully complete the projects. Let the fun edventure continue!
Music with Mr. Azzarto
Hello Connors families,
The week of March 13th was filled with some St. Patrick’s Day math and the band is working very hard to get ready for the spring concert.
In Ms. Garcia’s class the students completed some simple math and matched the time values with the proper notes. Once they found the correct notes they colored in their fun St. Patrick’s Day coloring page. Here is Lucas and Reese with their sheets!
The Connors band is always working hard on learning their instruments, but it gets really fun when they start playing the songs for the spring concert. Each grade level plays a different part and this orchestration forms a song that adds harmony to every song that is going to be performed. One of the songs that The Connors band will be performing was learned by ear. This means there is not written music for the song. This form of learning how to play a song is very important for a musician to learn. Learning how to read music and play the notes is one thing, but learning how to use your ear and figure out what you are supposed to play is totally another. Exercising your ear and using your ears to figure out a song is more popular than most people think. I don’t think the Beatles knew how to read music when they started. Just listen and play. Here is the 5th grade playing one of the new songs for the concert “by ear”.
