BEARy Exciting News!
During the first two weeks of school (and beyond) students will learn about the behavior expectations in each area of the school from the classrooms, to hallways, cafeteria, buses and so on. In the past, we taught these expectations with the PAWS. However, this year, we are changing things up a bit and will now be using the acronym BEARS:
- Brave
- Engaged
- Accountable
- Respectful
- Safe
Students are acknowledged and praised for exhibiting desired behaviors. All staff will be awarding students "Bear Bucks" that can be redeemed for prizes and raffle tickets.
Parents, you can track how many points (Bear Bucks) your child receives, which staff member awarded them, and how your child has spent them via the PBIS Rewards Parent App. Instructions on how to install and download the app were emailed to all parents this afternoon. For more information on the PBIS Rewards Parent App, please watch the informational video below.
Below are some additional ways that you can help support the PBIS (BEARS) program:
- Review the DES behavior expectations with your child using our BEARS acronym.
- Help solicit local businesses for small gifts and/or gift cards for rewards.
- Donate prizes for students. Anything from dollar tree/Oriental trading items to gift cards.
- Make a financial contribution of $5 per student (part of Online Orientation fees) to help offset the cost of student prizes/raffles & PBIS Rewards Program software.
- Support our PBIS (BEARS) fundraisers and spirit nights throughout the year. We already have two fundraisers up and running, birthday messages on our marquee, and Bruster's Blue Ice Days!
In Case You Missed It: Drop-Off/Pick-Up Procedures & Reminders
Below is a copy of an email that was sent to all parents earlier this week. We're sharing again for anyone that missed the initial communication.
********************************************************************************************
Dear Dyer parents,
Now that the students have all settled in, I would like to take this opportunity to communicate about a few safety concerns regarding the morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up procedures.
First and foremost, there are no left turns out of the parking lot between the hours of 7:45-8:25 AM & 2:25-3:15PM. I cannot stress this enough; Hurricane Shoals road has become increasingly busy in the past several years, and making a left turn out of our side parking lot during arrival and dismissal is extremely dangerous and illegal. In addition, please remember that the speed limit in our school zone is 25 miles per hour. The Gwinnett County Police department will be out to patrol this area and will issue citations to anyone violating traffic rules.
Our car-rider lane is located in our side parking lot. Please do not drop your child off in the bus lanes (in front of school) as this area is for bus and handicapped pick-up/drop-off only.
Our staff begins receiving car riders at 7:45AM each morning and the doors will close promptly at 8:15. We are unable to accept any car riders at the side door after 8:15 as our staff has to report to their classrooms to begin instruction. Anyone arriving to the curb after 8:15 must park and escort their child to the front office for late check-in. Please keep in mind that we have an unusually high number of car riders at this time and there is an increase in traffic along Hurricane Shoals Road. These are circumstances beyond our control; however, we have noticed that there is less traffic between 7:45-8AM so we suggest you try to arrive as early as possible to avoid delays.
Car rider dismissal begins at 2:45 each day. Parents may begin lining up prior to that time but must remain in their vehicle. Car rider dismissal will end promptly at 3:10 so that our staff can attend planning meetings. If you arrive after 3:10PM, you will need to park and come into the front office to check out your child.
Additional information regarding our car rider procedures can be found on the back of your pink car tag. Please be sure to review it carefully and follow the rules and procedures listed.
Of course, you are also welcome to utilize the GCPS bus services. You can do this easily by completing a Transportation Parent Authorization form and sending it in to the front office.
Thank you for your cooperation in keeping our students and their families safe!
Sincerely,
Mr. DiFilippo
