Canby School District News
May 1, 2019
Here we go! We're into the home stretch with just a little more than six weeks left in the school year. There is significant learning happening in all of our classrooms as our teachers work to help all students reach proficiency and reach their learning goals.
Our next budget committee meeting is May 6. While we await the final funding allocation from the state legislature, we are moving forward with plans to maintain our current service levels. We are planning some investments in areas where we need support. For instance, we're working to support staff to help students better manage their behaviors so they can concentrate on learning. Our budget committee will analyze our proposed budget and make a recommendation to the Board of Directors. The Board must adopt our budget for the 2019-20 school year by June 30.
By now, I hope you've received word that there will be no school for students next Wednesday, May 8. You can read my full message on this calendar change here. We want to ensure that our students have to opportunity to make up work missed and honor the instructional time currently on our calendar. Just for clarification, June 17 is not an added day. Our teachers are already scheduled to work through June 18.
I hope you'll join me in celebrating our certified staff the week of May 6. Our teachers, counselors, and specialists work hard to educate and care for all the children in our district. We couldn't be prouder of their commitment and dedication. We're grateful for our staff and your partnership with them. We're also celebrating our school nurses and our nutrition services workers during the week!
Enjoy the nicer weather as we head into what I hope is a warmer, drier spring. We look forward to finishing the 2018-19 school year strong!
Best,
Trip Goodall

"Our goals were to understand where lawmakers are in the budget process, reinforce the need to fully fund K-12 education and gain any insights we could into anticipated school funding levels," Board Chair Rob Sheveland told the Canby Herald. "Governor Brown has offered an ambitious budget plan for K-12 education. We were interested in learning the likelihood of her initiatives coming to fruition and how they may impact our students in Canby."

Future Chefs Competition
Eccles 4th grader Kara Leder was a regional finalist in the contest with her delicious Fruity Fiesta Salsa. Students were challenged to create a dish with a Mexican theme that was original, healthy, easy to make, kid-friendly, and presented well. For finishing in the Top 40, Kara won a Nintendo Switch Game Console with a game and a Garmin Vivofit junior fitness tracker.
Congratulations to Kara and to all of our district competitors who served up delicious, healthy meals during this year's contest.
