The Principal's POV on Making Connections!

Each week in the #BulldogBuzz I post a "Words to Inspire" pic/quote (scroll down for this week's inspiration...Jimmy Casas is the best!). You may have also noticed that in the footer I ALWAYS include the words: YOU are the strategy! This is something that we should never lose sight of. After all, trends may shift and programs will come & go, but when it comes to integrating #EverydaySEL & trauma informed practices it's all about US and what WE do to connect with our students!

One strategy to help us connect with students that author & BCBA, Jessica Minahan, recommends is called Two by Ten. Take two minutes each day, for ten days in a row, and use this time to talk with a student. There's only one stipulation: no talking about academics or behavior! Instead, ask questions & be curious! Learn about his/her interests, family, etc. and take some time to "strategically" share about you.

I know, I sounds great, but WHEN?!?! Starting Monday (and for the next 10 days), pick one student to eat breakfast at your guided reading table or next to your desk, and you will be ready to go! Since we're keeping it real with this one, Minahan also reminds us that this doesn't need to happen every single day of the year. Instead, she recommends repeating this "trust-building strategy several times throughout the year, especially after [a student exhibits] anger and frustration, after defiance/noncompliance or after long weekends/school vacations. We all know how unsettling changes in our schedule can be for some of our students, so this is the perfect time to give Two by Ten a try!

Thank you for a fantastic week & let me know who will be participating in your Two by Ten as we roll into Thanksgiving break, 1:00 dismissals/conferences & the holidays!
