Blue Bear Notes
Mashburn Elementary
Dear Mashburn Parents,
Thank you so much for all your support for “Change a Life”. This was a huge success as we raised over $1,300 for leukemia and lymphoma research. This is a true testament as we were displaying a Live to Give mindset. We appreciate you working with us and giving toward this House Mission. Thank you for all your support.
Thanks,
Mashburn Elementary
International Day
Mashburn will host its annual International Day on Friday, February 28th. We are looking for parent volunteers who would like to share with our students about your cultural heritage. Please complete the form if you are interested and available to host a session.
International Day Performances
Please let us know if your child is interested in performing during International Day. If your child is interested in performing a song, dance, storytelling, skit, or reciting a poem about his or her culture, please complete the below form by February 26th. All performances should be 5 minutes or less.
Career Day
Mashburn Elementary is preparing for its 1st Annual Career Day! This will be an exceptional occasion with your help; we invite you to serve as a Career Day speaker on Friday, March 27, 2020. Speakers/presenters are asked to arrive by 8:00 a.m. and stay until 1:30 p.m. A continental breakfast will be served, along with a special parting gift for participating. We need various career speakers to discuss their profession (job function, educational requirements, etc…). Also, we encourage speakers to bring job-related visuals and plan to speak for 25minutes per classroom presentation, there are a total of 9 rotations (1 of the 9 rotations will be allotted for you to break, so you will present for 8 sessions). We would like to offer our children inspiration, guidance, career exploration and knowledge as they embark upon college and career readiness.
Please click https://forms.gle/m2Z8KEm4Um4WwjJg6 to sign-up as a guest speaker. If you are unable to stay the entire time please designate the specific times you will be available to speak. If you are available to speak until 1:30 p.m. please indicate that as well. We will make every effort to include your child(ren)’s class in your schedule.
Parent Survey
We value your input, and want to hear from you. The Georgia Parent Survey contains 24 questions. Like the student survey, parent responses are anonymous, the responses will be submitted directly to the Georgia Department of Education for analysis, and will contribute to Mashburn’s School Climate Star Rating. Thank you so much for your time and support.

School Store
Let’s Go Shopping!!
Our School Store’s Grand Opening was a HUGE hit! Your students had the opportunity to cash in their Dojo Points for Blue Bear Bucks. Remember, each shopping adventure will take place the last week of each month. Students can immediately cash in their dojo points or save them for a larger prize in the store. Students are awarded points for exhibiting PAWS (Positive Attitude, Act Responsibly, Work Together, Show Respect) behavior. If you would like to donate items for the school store, please contact Katie Colson (kcolson@forsyth.k12.ga.us).Spirit Wear

Blue Bear Festival
The Blue Bear Festival is an annual event put on by the PTO but involves the entire Mashburn community. Teachers, staff, admin, parents, volunteers, middle/high school alums, and community vendors all gather at Mashburn for an evening of fun! We have activities ranging from face painting, bouncy houses, crazy hair booths, merch tent, and all sorts of carnival games, all on the backfield behind the gym. The local businesses set up tents/tables to promote products and interact with parents/students. Historically, we sold burgers and hot dogs, but we are thinking of using food-trucks or catering this year. Inside the gym, we have a cakewalk (donated sweets) and silent auction items, and themed baskets of donated items. To raise money throughout the week leading up to the event, kids can bring in money (usually coins) to vote for which staff member to get slimed (we also did kiss a live pig). It's the event of the year, and we get incredible turnout.
We are still looking for someone to chair the event and need about eight more volunteers on the planning committee, so make this event a success. Please drop your email address on our Mashburn PTO Facebook page if you're interested, and someone from our PTO board will reach out to you!
A Message From Nurse Jamie
Allergy Season is right around the corner!
It’s hard to focus in school or take a test with watery, itchy eyes and lots of sneezing and a runny nose, headache, or sore throat.
Start thinking about those allergy medications now. As pollen levels start to elevate; please make sure your child is taking their allergy medicine/eye drops at home before they leave for school. Be proactive and avoid a call from the school nurse! ; )
Helpful tips:
Hydrate: Drink plenty of water to keep fluids in motion, so irritants are flushed out.
Rest: Get plenty of sleep so that your immune system can function at its peak.
Clean: Change your pillowcases frequently to stop re-contamination.
Bathe: Wash hands/face and shower or bathe after being out in the pollen.
Here are is an excellent website to check the current pollen count and get ideas for allergy and asthma sufferers:

Volunteers for Girls on the Run
Girls on the Run volunteer coaches are the heart and soul of our organization. Coaches serve as mentors for our girls and do not have to be runners to have a great impact! Anyone who shares a common belief in the inherent strength, bravery, and limitless potential of all girls is encouraged to get involved.]
To ensure that every girl participating in the program at Mashburn has a high quality and impactful experience, 1 to 2 volunteers are needed to serve as coaches this Spring. The season begins February 11th and meets for 10 weeks on Tuesdays and Thursdays 3:15-4:30pm.
Are you interested in volunteering?
Coaches are provided with all the training, support and supplies needed to have a rewarding experience with the girls. Please contact Molly Stone, Executive Director at info@girlsontherunnorthga.org or 678-845-8216.

7 Mindsets Update
This month’s mindset is Everything is Possible. Throughout the month, we will focus on dreaming big, embracing creativity, thinking positively, and acting and adjusting. You and your child can work on applying this mindset at home by developing big dreams that help yourself and others, brainstorm creative ways to move towards accomplishing these goals, and following through on working towards your big dreams.
