Principal Appreciation Day
Friday, Oct. 21, is Principal Appreciation Day. Please, #ThankAPrincipal for how well they run your child’s school.
District 103 principals are second to none! Each day, our committed group of principals work with our staff to provide a safe, caring and intellectually challenging experience for our students. From the early morning to late evenings, our principals dedicate themselves to ensuring each student is cared for and given a high-quality education in a nurturing environment.
“The principals and assistant principals in District 103 are caring, supportive leaders who are driven to ensure our students, parents, and staff are the best they can be. We are very fortunate to have leaders of such caliber leading our schools,” said D103 Superintendent Scott Warren.
Please join District 103 in recognizing the dedication and commitment of our school administrators as they lead our teaching and learning communities To provide innovative learning experiences which empower each student to lead with empathy and make a difference in a diverse and interconnected world.

Emergency Response Drills
On Tuesday, Oct. 25, we will work with the local police department to practice the emergency response drill in a way that is grade level appropriate. Students are permitted to ask questions during the drill so they can be better prepared in the event of an emergency. Drills will take place at the following times:
- Sprague - 9:00 a.m.
Half Day - 10:15 a.m.
Daniel Wright - 11:00 a.m.
We Need Shoeboxes & Supplies
Sprague needs your adult shoeboxes & supplies for its children's Operation Shoebox fundraiser. Please scroll to the bottom of the page to see what is needed.
Lost and Found Overflowing
Please ask your child to visit the Lost & Found bins if something is missing. Water bottles, jackets, lunch boxes, and more can be found there. The school will donate unclaimed items. Do you see any of your student's belongings in the pictures? Please remember to clearly write your child's name on these items.
Help Us Celebrate Our Traditions
We celebrate our cultures everywhere and every day! Even with the Family Traditions Fair over, we still love learning about the foods we eat, the places to visit, the clothes we wear, how we celebrate holidays, etc.!
The Sprague's SEL/Diversity Committee would love to connect with individuals, families, or groups of caregivers who would be interested in contributing to a bulletin board display to teach others about their culture or about a culture that is relevant to their family. We are flexible in how you would prefer to contribute such as lending items, providing pictures/resources, or creating a bulletin board (showcased in our front hallway) by yourself or with others.
Please let us know how you would like to cooperate by filling out the Cultural Bulletin Board form. We will reach out to you as soon as possible and provide you further information! Please reach out Jackie Bever, jbever@d103.org, if you have any questions.

Digital Citizenship Lesson
In October, students had their second digital citizenship lesson:
Kindergartners participated in the lesson, “Pause, Breathe, Finish Up,” in which we learned a strategy to make it easier when it is time to step away from a device. Whether it's watching TV or playing on a tablet, using tech can be super fun! Often, kids find it hard to transition from an online activity to an offline one, so this simple routine teaches us one way to manage those inevitable digital interruptions that are part of everyone's lives in the digital age. The lesson has an accompanying strategy video you may view https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mq2INs6PQqs.
First-graders learned about the importance of recognizing our feelings when using our technology. We learned the strategy, “Pause, Think, Ask,” which calls awareness to any potential situations where we may be feeling uncomfortable, unhappy, unsafe, or unsure when we use our technology. Whenever we are using a screen, we have to pause to notice our feelings, think about what to do if we feel a negative feeling, and check in with a grown-up if we are feeling unsafe, unhappy, uncomfortable or unsure. You can view the short video that accompanies the lesson https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LB3nhKXm5E0.
Second-graders learned about device-free moments. This addresses times when it is best to be device-free, including when we need to be safe, to focus, to show respect/kindness, and when it’s time to rest. Students were encouraged to lead a conversation at home to plan for some times when it is best to be device-free. You can work together to identify and plan for some device-free time at home https://docs.google.com/document/d/1LvUB_SgvTKBqrHupAMs2hu3z_uPCwrLw4pFgIW0Kx2M/edit. If your family already has some rules or guidelines in place, you can use this conversation as a time to discuss the “why” behind your family’s screen time rules.

District News
Bus Driver Appreciation
Thank you to our extraordinary bus drivers, and the rest of our transportation team, who ensure our D103 students make it to school and home safely! We extend our heartfelt appreciation on Bus Driver Appreciation Day, Oct. 21. Thank you to our drivers; you are appreciated for your dedication and for always going the extra mile for our students! The district operates and maintains a fleet of 33 buses that travel the district's nearly 12 mile radius.
School Bus Drivers' Appreciation Day falls during National School Bus Safety Week, which has been set aside to remind people about school bus safety.
Here are a few bus safety rules that parents can review with their children:
On the Bus - Each student riding a bus is expected to:
Remain seated at all times
No food or drink
Be nice
Be safe
Waiting for the Bus:
While waiting for the bus, stay in a safe place away from the street.
Be alert to traffic. When you get on or off the bus, look left, right, left before you enter or cross the street.
When you get on or off the bus, look for the bus safety lights and make sure they are flashing.
If you must cross the street, wait for the driver to signal you when it’s safe to cross and to always cross in front of the bus.
If something falls under or near the bus, tell the driver. NEVER crawl under the bus to try and pick it up yourself.
Don't jump up or down, fight, bully or tease other passengers or make a lot of noise while riding the bus. These activities can distract the bus driver, and he or she won't be able to give proper attention to driving.
