Principal's Message
ELK Family,
The English I and English II STAAR EOC exams are next week. The English I EOC will be on Tuesday, April 10th. The English II EOC will be on Thursday, April 12th. Students who are taking the English I or English II STAAR EOC exam will need to bring their lunch from home on test day or sign up for a sack lunch provided by the cafeteria because they will be eating lunch in their testing rooms. The sack lunch will include the following:
Turkey/ham sandwich
Carrot sticks
Apple
Chocolate milk
Apple juice
Students wanting a sack lunch from the cafeteria on test day need to sign up in the Academic Office by the end of the day on Wednesday, April 4th. If they do not sign up for a sack lunch, they will need to bring their own from home.

Elk and Lady Elk Track
In its second to last competition before the District 9-5A Championships, Burleson’s boys and girls track and field squads performed Friday at the Aledo Bearcat Relays.
The Elks and Lady Elks final meet before district is today in Weatherford. The 9-5A championships will take place April 4-5 at Joshua Owl Stadium.
The Elks finished fourth after scoring 86 points Friday. Aledo took first place with 159 points. Waco finished second (104 points) and Waco was third (89).
In the 400 meters, Raymond Lynch finished second in a time of 51.66. Willie Stevenson placed fourth in a time of 52.40 and Skylar Webb was eighth in a time of 53.84. Jackson Shaha placed fourth in the 110 hurdles in a time of 16.83 and Jahbril Edwards was sixth in a time of 17.02. In the 300 hurdles, Edwards placed fifth in a time of 43.40. Casey Jackson and Shaha each clocked times of 44.02 to tie for sixth place.
Elias Word finished fifth in the 800 in a time of 2:08.28, and Skylar Webb was sixth in a time of 2:08.31. In the 1,600, Word placed fifth in a time of 4:51.06. Chris Smith was sixth in the 3,200 in a time of 10:51.72.
In the shot put, Garret Lake finished second with an effort of 43-11.5. Sean Joseph placed fifth in the triple jump with an effort of 41-5.5. In the discus, J.C. Mueller finished seventh with a throw of 131-3. Caleb Kirby placed seventh after clearing 12 feet in the pole vault.
In the 1,600 relay, the team of Iver Macaulay, Willie Stevenson, Calvin Williams, and Raymond Lynch finished fourth in a time of 3:32.18. The team of Joseph, Shaha, Iver Macaulay and Williams placed fifth in the 400 relay in a time of 44.93. In the 800 relay, the team of Macaulay, Joseph, Williams, Christian Doss was seventh in a time of 1:34.18.
Burleson’s girls finished seventh with 39 points. Centennial scored 170 points to win the title. Keller Central placed second (115 points) and Aledo was third (99).
Meadow Renfro finished third in the 800 in a time of 2:35.96, and placed fourth in the 1,600 in a time of 5:45.49. In the 200, Elizabeth Robertson was fourth in a time of 26.34. Tylee Prater finished fourth in the 100 hurdles in a time of 16.81 and Icis Young placed sixth in a time of 17.06. In the 3,200, Emily Tebo placed sixth in a time of 13:40.68, and Bryanne Barajas was seventh in a time of 13:32.81.
In the long jump. Virgina Davis finished third with an effort of 16-07.50. Davis placed third in the triple jump with an effort of 34-1. Gracie Guinty placed fifth in the high jump after clearing five feet. Katie Arguello was eighth in the after clearing 4-8. In the discus, Dafni Pearson finished eighth with a toss of 83-3.
The team of Chatira Rubio, Madison Lewis, Arguello and Robertson placed fifth in the 1,600 relay in a time of 4:22.68. In the 400 relay, the team of Rayn Martin, Rubio, Davis and Robertson finished seventh in a time of 51.98.
Elk JV Black and JV Red Baseball
JV Black
The JV Black picked up a 6-3 victory over the Jackets; the game was called after 6 innings because of District 9-5A time limit rules.
Starting pitcher Taylor Branch, a freshman, was solid for the Elks, as he allowed just one earned run and 3 hits in 4 innings pitched; he struck out four. Branch upped his record to 2-1 overall, and 2-0 in District 9-5A games. Freshman Nick Cartmill allowed one earned run and struck out two Jackets in two innings of relief.
Branch and Freshman Harley Yates had mutli-hit games to pace the BHS offense. Branch was 2-3 with a walk, and Yates was 2-2 with a double, a walk and two RBI. Freshmen Sloan Esparza and Chris Pritchett each had a double.
The win ups the JV Black’s overall record to 10-3-1; the team’s District 9-5A record is now 6-0-1. Coach Crawford’s crew returns to the diamond on Monday, April 2nd, against the Crowley High School Eagles. First pitch is slated for 5:30 PM at Crowley High.
JV Red
The JV Red won yet another Monday night game, defeating Cleburne 7-3 behind a complete game from Sophomore Skylar Webb.
Webb continued his strong 2018 campaign by allowing 3 earned runs in 7 innings pitched; he permitted 10 hits, but none went for extra bases. Webb struck out two Jackets, and also made several crucial defensive plays to help his cause. With the win, Webb is now 3-0 on the season, and 2-0 in District 9-5A games.
The Elks’ offense was led by Junior lead-off hitter Dereck Perez. Perez was 2-4 with a double and 3 runs scored, and scored the game-winning run in the top of the 7th inning on a groundball by Junior Carlos Trujillo. Sophomore Blake Metts was 3-4 with an RBI, and scored a run.
The JV Red is now 11-5 overall, and 5-1 in games played on Monday. The team’s District 9-5A record is 3-4.

Students, how would you like to drive a new Nissan Sentra? You could be the lucky winner of a new car if you participate in the Burleson High School, STRIVE-TO-DRIVE program. Here’s how:
- Students must be enrolled in the Burleson ISD for the entire 6 week grading period.
- Students may earn 1 ticket per 6 weeks for perfect attendance.
- Students may earn 4 BONUS tickets per semester for perfect attendance (Fall & Spring).
- Students may earn 10 BONUS tickets for the year for perfect attendance.
- Students may earn a maximum of 24 tickets per school year.
A Nissan Sentra will be awarded in May, at halftime, of the BHS Powder Puff football game.
**The district will utilize state guidelines for reporting average daily attendance to determine perfect attendance contest eligibility.**
**Students will not be notified about the number of tickets they have been awarded. If a student has questions, he/she should go to their House Office.**
