Letters of Recommendation
1. Make sure you give the person writing the recommendation plenty of time (at least 2 weeks). Letters that have to be rushed are usually not as good or the person may not have time to get the letter completed. Below is a helpful website for people writing the recommendation
2. Give them a resume or list of activities you are involved. Education Quest has a tool called Activities Resume that allows you to enter your information in and choose from a few different forms of resumes. The person writing the recommendation can write a better letter if they know more about you.
3. Be clear as to what you are using the recommendation for. You could provide the information about the scholarship you are applying for.
4. Follow recommendation criteria. Is it confidential or can you view it? Sometimes the letter of recommendation has to be sent in by the person writing it. Other times, the person doing the recommendation can put it in a sealed envelope with their signature across the seal.
5. If you have some people in mind to write a recommendation. Go ahead and ask them for a general letter of recommendation now! Have them save it so they can customize it when you need it.
6. Get letters from a variety of sources. Ask your counselor, principal, teacher, coach, or other school personnel. Other good sources would be co-workers or bosses, community members, church leaders, or organization leaders.
