How to Make the Best of Your Environment
Have you ever found yourself in a place you are not prepared for as a parent?
This recently happened to me while on break. I have a 12-year-old daughter and 4-year-old son. One of the first days into break I thought it would be a great idea to schedule my daughter for an orthodontist appointment at 9:00 am. Since we were off our normal schedule of course we were rushing to get to the appointment on time. We arrived at the appointment on time but I then realized I forgot to grab my son a car or two to help occupy him in the waiting room, and the back-up set I normally have in the car for emergency purposes had made it into the house.
The weather was too cold to take a walk outside. Keeping my well rested and active boy in my small car with it running for warmth during an hour-long appointment was also not a possibility. So here I am with an active 4-year-old in a quiet waiting room with a very understanding office staff trying to find things to keep him from rolling around on the floor.
As I am looking around the holiday decorations catch my eye. Yes!!! I think to myself, I can make this work. The rest of our time in the waiting room was filled with learning questions that he found so fun he didn’t realize he was learning.
These are a few of the questions we did “What color is the small drum?”, “How many green bells can you find?”, “How many large birds are there?”, “How many half circles are in the garland?”, “Let’s count the coconuts on the tree.”
It was a great activity and even the staff enjoyed watching him. Later that day I overheard my daughter and son in the playroom, and he was asking her various learning questions as we had done at the appointment. She was a great peer learner by acting like he was teaching her something new.
Look around your environment. Teachable moments and fun learning opportunities abound!
Yours in Learning,
Mrs. Elise
