Please Stop Laughing At Me

Written by bully activist, Jodee Blanco

A Summary of the Book

Please Stop Laughing At Me is a heart-wrenching, eye opening novel about the effects of bullying. The book is the story of Jodee Blanco, a girl who had faced immense bullying throughout her life. She had to face challenges that hardly anyone in her class had to face on a daily basis. She worried about getting from class to class without getting taunted, teased, or even abused. She had to move from school to school because of the constant bullying. Jodee suffered constant bullying up until high school, and no matter what she did, she was bullied for it. Her book shows how bullying has a lasting effect on people. On page two of Please Stop Laughing At Me, it states, “I’m being ridiculous. It’s just a high school reunion, there’s nothing to be frightened of. They can’t hurt me anymore.” Even though she faced a ton of challenges, Jodee Blanco was able to use them to help other people know the effects that bullying has on kids.

Character Analysis

Jodee is a teenage girl who would try anything to fit in. For example, on page 7," My mom even bought me a pair of baby pink Candies to celebrate. ... If you want to be accepted, you wear Candies, and when I have them on, I feel beautiful and grown-up." Jodee would try anything to fit in. She liked to listen to music, write, and she was in the speech club in school. She also loved to act. She lived with her mom and dad and was an only child. She also developed an abnormality in her breasts during her teen years, causing more taunting and teasing.

The type of conflict Jodee faces in the book Please Stop Laughing At Me is character versus society. I believe it such because whatever school she attends, she is made fun of. When she attends Samuals, she is bullied even outside of school by her classmates. Jodee writes, "Each afternoon, they gang up on me, riding me about what I'm wearing or how I've done my hair. They snicker behind my back, sharing jokes with the res of the class about how I refused to dissect the pig in Mr. Bratt's class, or how I went crying to the principal over a silly "snowball fight." I feel as if I'm trapped inside a stereo that's playing a broken record..."(Blanco 137)

For the theme of this book, I believe it is Don't focus on the bad. Focus on what's to come, even if it's hard. I believe that this is the theme for Please Stop Laughing At Me because Jodee focused on the bad in the beginning of the book, but then she started to think about the good that was coming and it seemed to make her life a little easier.

Textual Evidence

My favorite quote from the novel Please Stop Laughing At Me is "Am I going to be this way for the rest of my life, always waiting for something bad to happen? Will I never truly be able to trust anyone? I worry that when I'm older, I'll be so afraid that people won't like me that I'll have trouble believing it when they actually do." I think this quote is very powerful because it truly shows the effects bullying can have on a person's life. She is worried about people lying to her when they say they like her. She has major trusting issues because of all of the false words said to her. This quote shows how much bullying hurts people on the inside, and not just the outside.

Book Review

Rating: ★★★☆ 4/5 stars

I rate this book 4/5 stars because it is very emotional, and detailed. Also, it shows the life of a bullied child, and the effects bullying has on someone. However, after some research, it is said that Jodee made up some parts to the story or exaggerated certain event. I have to take away one star because even though it is a true story, not all of it is.
