New Beginnings Class Newsletter
For the Week of 9/18-9/22
What We Worked On
Read Aloud- We read the stories "Ten Apples Up On Top," and an apple tree vocabulary book.
Skills- We continued to review the letter "A" and the number 1. We introduced the color red and the circle shape. We also worked on apple vocabulary, including the words "tree," "pie," "apple," "basket," "blossoms," and "bud."
Looking Ahead- We will continue to work on apples and, after our field trip, read the story "Little Red Riding Hood." We will work on the letter "B" and the number "2."
What Can I Do?
- Do some hand over hands when it comes to things such as using a fork or spoon to eat, getting them used to the spearing or scooping motion. Then have them try it for themselves. Encourage "no hands" unless it's finger foods.
- Continue to encourage drinking from a cup with no spouts. They get use to keep their mouth open wide when drinking from a sippy cup or other cups with a spout, and then it's difficult for them to learn to drink from other things like a straw.
- Continue to encourage them in helping with the dressing themselves, allowing them to try to put their pants on or take their shirts off with no help. Celebrate their independence and accomplishments when they are successful, even if their pants are on backwards.
- During play, add some fine motor activities. Get out the paper for drawing and coloring, play doh and clay for building hand strength. and other fun things (like whip cream, shaving cream, or pudding) to practice making their names in. We do it at school too, so we've also been working on what's okay to eat and what does not belong in our mouths. We tend to say "no mouth" during these activities, but we've also seen a decline in your child putting things in their mouths.
