The Gower Gazette
Week 20- January 18, 2019
In the Classroom...
In reading we integrated Social Studies with our reading goals. Our book of the week was The Fisherman and his Wife. This story targeted wants and needs and helped us learn about the lesson of a story. We were able to use details to describe our characters and had a great discussion about the wife and the lesson she learned. See if your child can share this with you. This will also be our Read & Respond Blog question this week. If your child logs on to our class website and responds to this question then he/she can have lunch with me on Friday the 25th.
Exciting things happened during our Daily 5 rotations. We had a guest, Mrs. Tuttle, visit our classroom. She helped the students launch their learning portfolios which they will use for our student-led conferences (at the end of the 3rd quarter). The kids were so excited to create their Google Site and learn how to add their work. I hope you heard a little about this at home.
With us learning about earning, spending, and saving money, the kids really explored the reasons why people work. We looked at many different jobs and talked a lot about what interested us. Each child chose a career for what they want to be when they grow up. They wrote their opinion piece and almost all of them have finished publishing it. They were so excited to type their writing on the computers. Career Day is next week on Friday, Jan. 25th. Please be sure to find out what career your child picked and wrote about. On the 25th, the kids should come to school dressed in their career outfit for a special technology project we are going to create. We can't wait to share it with you!!! Please note that if your child chose a profession like a police officer, they cannot bring any type of weapon like a plastic gun. This is against our school policy. Be creative and use what you have at home for these costumes; you don't need to buy things or spend money on this. Let me know if you have any questions.
In math this week we began our unit on measurement. The kids learned about standard units and non-standard units. They explored each type during our math stations. See if your child can explain what the difference is between these two types of measurement.
The kids are loving learning about motion during science. This week we learned about push and pull and spinning. The kids were challenged to create a top that would spin the longest. They had take what they knew about balance and gravity to create these. It was a lot of fun.
Whew!!! As you can see we have been so busy!!! Next week is our last week and it is a short week. We have Monday off for Martin Luther King Jr's birthday. Enjoy the long weekend and we'll see the kids back on Tuesday for another busy week of learning.
Have a great weekend.
