Safety Training
Standard Response Protocol
Dear Weatherford ISD Families:
We are writing to inform you of a safety training for students and staff that will take place next week (February 20-23) at all Weatherford ISD campuses. This training, presented by the Texas School Safety Center and the i love you guys® Foundation, was recently attended by District staff and is designed to enhance the safety processes that are already in place at all campuses. Campuses and classrooms will be displaying posters that contain information about what to do in the event of a safety or weather emergency. We want you, as parents and guardians, to be aware of the terms we use when a safety issue or weather event occurs. Attached you’ll find a copy of the poster that will be displayed in each classroom and a parent handout that will describe the process teachers and students will use for the following situations:
Lockout, Lockdown, Evacuate, Shelter, Hold
We hope that, by providing you with this information, you will be able to have conversations with your child about school safety. There are some key components of this program that we want to highlight:
- Students who have cell phones will be asked to communicate with their parents on a regular basis during an emergency situation.
- Weatherford ISD will also communicate with parents via SchoolMessenger calls, emails and texts during safety or weather-related events. As a reminder, to receive texts from Weatherford ISD you must OPT-IN by texting YES to 68453.
In addition to this new training, I’d like to assure you that Weatherford ISD has multiple layers of safety processes already in place.
- Campuses hold multiple safety/weather drills annually, including a Lockdown drill, which is designed for an intruder situation
- The 2015 bond approved by our community provided significant safety enhancements to our campuses that included the installation of secured entrances, additional security cameras, and perimeter keyless entries.
- We have School Resource Officers (SROs) in Weatherford ISD. An SRO is a sworn Weatherford Police officer assigned to a school on a long-term basis trained to perform three major roles: law enforcement officer, law-related counselor and law-related educator. In addition, the officer works in collaboration with the school and the community as a resource for safety and security issues. The SRO also provides a highly visible presence to deter crime and to identify trespassers on campus.
- All staff have been directed to keep all classroom doors locked as an added safety measure.
- We partner with local law enforcement for safety summits and trainings.
- There is a link for Anonymous Tips on the right side of every campus website. If you submit a concern through this link you may provide contact information so we can reach you, or you may report anonymously.
I would encourage you to remind your children they should immediately contact a teacher or administrator with any safety concerns. I also want to encourage you to contact my office immediately with any concerns you may have. As a parent, you may be aware of situations before we are. Thank you for helping us keep a safe school environment.
Sincerely,
Jeffrey M. Hanks, Ph.D.
