Then and Now: Grade 1 Example
In a 1st grade classroom today... students might be asked to snap a picture of their drawing of each shape and record themselves naming its properties and the things that make it different from other shapes. Alternatively, students can draw the shapes using an illustration tool on their iPad and create a slideshow where they name each shape as it appears on the screen. They might also take pictures of trapezoids, circus and squares found inside and outside their classroom and arrange these on a slideshow or digital poster, carefully labeling each image.
Then and Now: Grade 5 Example
In a 5th grade classroom today...students might be asked to sort through rocks and minerals in a kit, holding each one in their hand. As they scan a QR code next to each item, they are taken to a website to view an interactive map that shows where a rock appears in nature or to watch a video showing how minerals are used in different industries. With technology, students can access information on rocks or minerals that might be hard to bring into the classroom like diamonds or opals. Students then create a tutorial about what they've learning using a screen casting tool that includes images, text, and voice narration as the culmination of the unit. Teachers might include a visual reality field trip to a national park during the unit or a videoconference conducted with a mineral expert two time zones away.
