FBE December Newsletter
December 2019
Happy Holidays
Our Winter Break will be from December 23-January 3rd. I want to take this opportunity to wish all of our Flour Bluff Elementary students and families a wonderful Holiday Season!
The students and staff have been working so hard and the time off to enjoy friends and family is well deserved. It is my hope that students and staff will take this time to renew, refresh, reflect, and truly enjoy their time with family and friends.
Personally, our deployed soldiers and their families are always on the forefront of my thoughts during the holiday season and I want to especially thank them for their sacrifice for our country. I wish them, and all of you, the blessings of Joy, Love, and Peace.
Happy Holidays!!!! -Dr. Youngberg

Library News by Mrs. Browning, Librarian
Please have your child bring a picture of them “getting caught reading” at home for our bulletin board. We’d love to fill up the bulletin board with our Readers Today-Leaders Tomorrow.
I am also still accepting pictures for our Military Wall of Honor. We want to honor our men and women who are active or retired military.
Please continue to send in the Boxtops for Education labels that you clip from products. Also, download the free app and remember to scan your receipts when you purchase a product with the scan label. Don’t scan the label. You scan your receipt. It’s really easy to set up and use.
I hope you and your family have a wonderful Thanksgiving break. It’s a great time to enjoy reading with your child.
Positive Behavior Support by Mrs. Cristan, Assistant Principal
Communication is a key component of a successful Positive Behavior Intervention System (PBIS) program. There are several ways parents and teachers routinely communicate at Flour Bluff Elementary. Student agendas and the blue PBIS folders are used to send information about assignments, activities, and notes about behavior. The notes about behavior allow the teacher and parent to communicate how well the student is meeting the four core PBIS expectations for the classroom. These are:
Expectation 1 - Follow Directions
*Stop, look, and listen when directions are given. Follow directions quickly.
Expectation 2 - Be Polite
*Raise your hand for permission to talk. Use appropriate voice levels.
*Say “Please, thank you, and excuse me.” Speak to others with kind words.
Expectation 3 - Be Safe
*Respect others’ space. Keep your hands and feet to yourself.
Expectation 4 - Be Prepared
*Return folders and homework on time. Have all school supplies.
Accountability: Set goals with your child.
Equally important, the agenda and PBIS folder help to establish a cadence of accountability. Our students are far more likely to achieve goals when a trusted person checks in with him/her on a consistent basis. Setting regular “check-in” times is what author, Steven Covey, calls establishing a cadence of accountability. By asking your child “How are things going?”, “How can I help you?”, “What do you feel will help you?”, you can help ensure that your child feels supported, involved, accountable, and responsible. You can then become your child’s cheerleader and motivator as you help him/her to self-reflect on the progress that he/she has made. Please make it a practice to review the agenda and the blue PBIS folder with your child. Set goals with your child, have meaningful conversation about his/her progression toward achieving the goals, and celebrate the successes. Compliments are great ways of celebrating. The time that you spend developing these habits will have immeasurable effects not only this school year, but in years to come.
Counselor's Corner by Mrs. Villarreal
This month, we will continue to discuss KINDNESS and EMPATHY. We have been talking about showing kindness to our classmates by including them at recess, using kind words when speaking to others, and trying to understand how others feel. Our students are doing a great job and have shared such heartfelt stories with me.
This month, we will also continue to discuss bullying and negative peer pressure. All students have been taught the S.W.A.T. method to protect themselves from bullying. They also have been taught Conflict Resolution skills through role plays. Our students have shown great progress at applying these skills.
Things to discuss at home with your child:
* Ask your child what S.W.A.T. stands for
*Discuss ways to show kindness at home, school, and in the community
*Think about ways to help in the community by volunteering, donating toys or clothing to a local charity, and spending time with the family.
As always, I am available to speak with your child on various topics. Please contact me at 361-694-9593
CURRICULUM HIGHLIGHTS by Mrs. Hoover
Nurse's Corner by Nurse Cheryl
With cooler temps approaching (hopefully), wearing the appropriate winter clothing is a must if you are planning to venture out in cold weather. This is especially true for children. Be sure to dress in several layers of clothing. These layers can easily be removed once indoors. The outermost layer should be wind and water resistant; this will help to keep students warm and dry as they play outdoors. Don’t forget to wear a good pair of shoes and always wear socks.
Just before going outside, make sure you put on gloves/mittens, and especially a hat. Body heat is lost through the top of our head.
Did you know that drinking liquids is important even in colder weather? As people breathe in and out, the body loses a large volume of water. Giving your child soup or warm cider to drink will not only help to warm them up from the inside out, but will keep them well hydrated. Winter can be an exciting time to play outside, so make sure you and your children are well-prepared and well-dressed for the occasion.
