Mr. Goetz's Corner
Dear Families of Deerfield,
It has been a wonderful week here at Deerfield, full of good food and exciting learning opportunities! Our students have been learning about the historical importance of the first Thanksgiving. As a result, our SAILS class and our Kindergarten classes enjoyed Thanksgiving Feasts that were amazing! Our SAILS students prepared a delicious meal for their parents and staff as a way of saying “Thank You” to those who help them every day. Our Kindergarten students learned how the Native Americans helped the Pilgrims when they came to the New World and that they shared a meal together as a way of saying, “Thank You.” They recreated this meal with students dressing as Pilgrims and Native Americans.
Additionally, our fifth grade students have been studying about Early Americans. They recently completed a Project Based Learning (PBL) unit, in partnership with Auburn Elementary fifth grade students, where the students worked in groups to study a Native American tribe and answer this driving question: How can we create artifacts to describe how the early Americans use natural resources to help build a culture? The students created amazing artifacts including model homes, clothing, tools, and more. To showcase their artifacts the students set up a museum in our library. Deerfield students were able to visit the museum during the day to learn about the different tribes. Also, Auburn fifth grade students were invited to Deerfield to see the artifacts and learn about the Early Americans. The Deerfield fifth grade students also had the opportunity to travel to Auburn to view the artifacts they had created. Thank you to Mrs. Scholz for organizing this fantastic learning opportunity for our students!
With the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday coming, I would like to share with you that I am thankful for my family. When I think of my family, it goes beyond those who live with me in my home, but includes the Deerfield community as well. The students, staff and parents all feel like family to me and I feel blessed every day to be able to come to this great place and spend time with amazing people. I hope that you have a relaxing holiday with time to visit family and enjoy some delicious food.
Have a wonderful weekend and Happy Thanksgiving!
Mr. Goetz
