Formal Occasions, Final Farewells, Exams & Study Leave
The first 3 weeks of Term 4 have flown by. It is an extremely busy time at school for both students and staff. The students are currently attending the numerous formal, end-of-year events and year level assemblies, while continuing to prepare for their examinations that commence on Wednesday 6th November for both Junior and Senior students.
ARGYLE PRIZEGIVING
This is a reminder that we have our own Hostel Prizegiving, this Sunday 3rd November in Gymnasium 1. All boys are required to attend this compulsory formal occasion in their number 1s and are to have returned to Argyle House no later than 5.30pm. Please ensure your transport arrangements this weekend allow for your son to return by 5.30pm. I thank you in anticipation of your support.
The Argyle Prizegiving is a very special evening where we celebrate as a parent, boarder and staff group the many successes and achievements of 2019, for what has been another excellent year within Argyle House. Please feel free to bring as many family members as you wish, as there will be no shortage of seats in Gymnasium 1.
Argyle Prizegiving Timeline:
5.00pm: Parents/Caregivers meeting (Hostel prep Room). The Headmaster, Mrs Hassall, Charman of the Hostel Committee, Mr Craig Coxhead and myself will be in attendance to run proceedings at this meeting. We welcome all Parents/Caregivers to attend.
5.20 - 6.15pm: Dinner in the Argyle Dining Room for all families, boys, staff and guests.
6.25pm: Everyone to be seated in Gymnasium 1
6.30pm: Argyle Prizegiving begins
8.00pm: Prizegiving concludes, Supper at the rear of Gymnasium 1.
HAMILTON BOYS' HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR PRIZEGIVING
There are three official days of school left for our senior students, who are all required to attend school up to and including the Hamilton BHS Senior Prizegiving, commencing 10.00am, Tuesday 5th November, in Gymnasium 1. Please do not request leave for your son to depart prior to 12.00pm Tuesday, as the leave will be declined out of respect for the Headmaster, Hamilton BHS staff and all senior students walking across the stage to accept a prize or to graduate, in the case of all Year 13 students. It is the most significant formal occasion in the school calendar and all senior students are expected to attend. It will conclude approximately 12.00pm.
I look forward to seeing you all on Sunday 3rd November at our annual Argyle Prizegiving.
Kind regards
Murray McKenzie

Argyle Year 13 Leavers' Dinner, Friday 1st November
Head Prefect, Hakaraia Richards-Coxhead and Deputy Head Prefects, Blake Morgan and Angus Ritchie are busy preparing for the Argyle Leavers’ Dinner, this Friday 1st November in the Argyle Dining Room.
This formal dinner commences at 5.30pm in the Junior TV Lounge with nibbles and refreshments, with everyone seated and the formalities commencing in the Dining Room from 6.00pm. Head Prefect, Hakaraia Richards-Coxhead, will be our Master of Ceremonies for the evening.
NCEA Exams & Study Leave, Wednesday 6th November
Study leave for our senior students will commence immediately after the Hamilton Boys’ High School Senior Prizegiving on Tuesday 5th November.
A staff-supervised study programme commencing on Wednesday 6th November in the hostel prep room will be in place to ensure your son can study effectively over the 3-week period of NCEA exams should your son decide to remain at the Grove or Argyle during this time. Boys residing at Grove will have the option to study in their room at Grove or in the hostel prep room. Mr Logan Asplin (Grove Master), will be completing sweeps of the Grove throughout the study hours scheduled.
All seniors have the option to take leave to study at home during this time so they will need to carefully think through what will best suit them so we can accurately plan and inform the catering management of those seniors that will be in and out for all meals over this period
Junior Exams, Years 9 & 10
Junior Exams, for Years 9 and 10, commence on Wednesday 6th November and conclude on Monday 11th November.
On the day of the School Senior Prizegiving, all Years 9 & 10 boarders will complete a staff-supervised morning study session in the prep room with Dean of Boarding, Mr Jeremy Quigley, from 9.00am – 10.30am, morning tea from 10.30 - 11.00am, final study session from 11.00am - 12.00pm, as final preparation for their exams that commence the following day.
Boarders that have a brother receiving an award, have the option of attending the senior prizegiving with their family.
New Boarders' Orientation Day: Thursday 7th November
The New Boarders' Orientation Day is scheduled for Thursday 7th November, the same day as the Year 8 testing for all those coming in to Hamilton BHS as a Year 9 student in 2020.
Part of this day will require hostel families enrolled for 2020 to come across to Argyle House to finalise all arrangements i.e. issuing of laundry numbers, labelling, Argyle Manual, security/keys, as well as many administrative matters e.g. fees payment methods.
Grove Lease: Final Day, Tuesday 19th November
The Grove lease for 2019 concludes on Tuesday 19th November, at which time any Year 13 students remaining will be accommodated over at Argyle House from that evening.
All boys are to have vacated their rooms by 5.00pm, Tuesday 19th November, so their final night at Grove is Monday 18th November.
All rooms are being checked off at 9.00am Wednesday 22nd November by Grove Master, Mr Logan Asplin and Grove Management.
The final clean and any maintenance requirements are to be completed by Friday 22nd November, which is the day we hand over the studios to Grove Management.
2020 Prefect & Senior Leader Appointments
On Monday 21st October, Senior Master, Matua Mita Graham and I interviewed 16 Year 11 boarders that applied for the 8 Year 12 Prefect's positions for 2020. We then interviewed a further 12 Year 12 boarders that applied for the 6 Year 13 Prefect and Senior Leader positions 2020.
It was pleasing to have received 28 applications for the 13 hostel student leadership positions available in Years 12 and 13 for 2020, and we will have great pleasure in announcing these positions on Monday 4th November.
Dorm Leaders, Term 4
For the remaining three terms each dorm has at least one Prefect or Senior Leader and is paired with a Year 12 student who volunteers to be a Dorm Leader. Volunteers are vetted by the Masters and Senior Master, Matua Graham, as to their suitability. They all receive guidance and support at their weekly Tuesday evening meetings with Matua Graham and the six Year 13 Senior Leaders & Prefects who all reside at Grove.
The Dorm Leaders are extremely conscientious when carrying out their role to ensure the efficient day-to-day running of the hostel, especially at morning wake-up and check-off, and again at lights-out each evening. They also provide the care and guidance needed for our new and young boarders in the junior dorms.
At the end of each term all Year 12 Dorm Leaders, Prefects and Senior Leaders go out for dinner at 'Gengy's', for an all-you-can-eat meal as just reward for their service to the hostel throughout the term. They are accompanied by the Year 13 Prefects and Senior Leaders.
