A Note from Ms. Coyle
We had a great week here at Nicholson! We are getting outside for recess whenever possible, so please make sure your child has gloves and a hat to wear each day. Second Grade parents: Second Graders will be taking the COGAT assessment in the next few weeks. COGAT is an achievement test for all Kindergarten, Second Grade, and Fifth Grade students that measures reasoning and problem solving skills. Your child's results will be sent to you after Spring Break. Let me know if you have any questions. I hope you have a wonderful weekend. Please let me know if there is anything I can do for you or your child.
Kids Heart Challenge
Nicholson will be hosting a family event on February 16th from 5:30-6:30. Mark your calendar and come out and join us to see what your child will be talking about as they are introduced to the Kids Heart Challenge (KHC) with the American Heart Association. Come hear the messages that each character has to say and join in the fun activities we will have for the night. Are you up to the challenge? Let’s be heart healthy!!
Science Fun
Nicholson is happy to announce Science Rotations to maximize our Science curriculum! Each Friday your child’s class will rotate to another teacher within their grade level for one hour to learn about anything from ecosystems to the engineering process!
Third Grade: We are in need of paper towel/ toilet paper rolls for their engineering class. Please send those in to school if you are willing to donate them. Thank you!
Yearbook orders
Yearbooks are on sale now for $13.00. When your child brings the order form home, please fill out completely and return to school with payment. Checks should be made payable to Pettit Photo. Forms and money are due back by Friday, February 24th. Pleae contact Nicholson with any questions.

Academic Vocabulary
Each week students learn about and discuss an academic vocabulary word. Teachers have these words hanging up in the classroom and refer back to them throughout the week. Ms. Coyle talks about the words on the announcements, and students do short partner activities in the cafeteria at lunch to help them better understand these words and how they can be used in all subjects. Here are a few of the words we have been working on!

Coke Points
You can help Nicholson earn equipment and supplies by sending the caps/codes off Coca Cola products into the school. Send in the cap or code on the inside of the carton to Nicholson. Look for codes on specially marked packages of your favorite Coca-Cola products (under caps or inside the box of cans).
Teacher Shout Outs
This is a great way to celebrate your child's teacher or any adult here at Nicholson. I share these with teachers each week and it definitely brings a smile to their face!

Morning Drop Off
Our parking lot is very busy in the mornings and also very dark. Please follow the flow of traffic (no u-turns) and stay in line until you've dropped your student off. I also ask that you do not get out of line and bypass other cars after dropping your student off. We have students that walk around the vehicle when exiting and cutting out of line creates very unsafe situations. There is room for 5 cars to unload at a time. Colored signs mark where students can exit their car. We will have staff on the sidewalk making sure the line is moving as quickly as possible.
Also, our car rider door closes and locks at 7:50am. After this time, you MUST drop your student off at the main doors. Please do not leave your student at the car rider door if it is not attended by a staff member.

Dismissal
Car riders are picked up in our parking lot. Please do not block the entrance to the Lane House Nursing Home. If your child is consistently a car rider in the afternoon, you are required to have a school-issued tag that coordinates with your student. If you did not receive tags, please email call our office to get one. Students will not be released to anyone without a tag or a note from the office. Transportation changes must be made by 2:00pm. This year, all cars are asked to make a right hand turn out of the parking lot. This will keep cards from crossing in front of the buses. Thank you!
Covid Protocols
- IDOH does not recommend quarantine or contact tracing in K-12 schools
- Individuals who test positive for COVID-19 should continue to isolate for at least 5 days
- Once isolation has ended, the agency recommends you were a high quality mask through day 10.
If a student is in close contact with a person who tests positive, they can continue to come to school as long as they remain symptom free. If a student tests positive, the school nurse needs a photo/copy of the positive test result
