TerraNichol Academy of the Arts
Weekly School Blog May 6th-10th, 2019
Our journey and wonder in learning labs this week.
Another happy week was had by our students and teachers. We can't believe the year is wrapping up. It feels that the first day of school was just a few weeks ago. We have had a beautiful year with students this year and we feel that we have learned as much from them as they from us. We thank you for all of your kind words this week and we are grateful to be a part of your child's early educational career.
This week students learned about the artist Monet in the art studio creating paintings inspired by his painting Waterlillies. Students used many books full of Monet's life word to learn about his use of light and reflection both of which remained important to him throughout his artistic journey. Students have also begun learning about the artist Wyland. They are learning that his artwork carries the message of conservation and protection of our oceans and the animals that live in or near the ocean. As they learn about Wyland's art some which you can see in the Florida Keys students are inspired to create their own masterpieces about an animal or a part of the ocean that they wish to educate others about.
Who knew pineapples could be so interesting. Not only are they delicious and nutritious but they inspired a fun and creative art project. Don't forget "Be like a pineapple, stand tall, wear a crown and be sweet on the inside". Next week we will cut open our pineapples and enjoy!
We have a very busy week ahead next week with final preparations happing for the Junior Kindergarten and Kindergarten Performance of A Night at the Art Museum. We hope to see many of our families at the show to support our students. Remember next week is a shortened week with school closed on Thursday and Friday so that the teaching team may prepare LemonBay Playhouse for the show.

Monet in the Art Studio
Did you Know!
Monet was born in Paris, France. His father wanted him to help run the family's grocery business. However, Monet wanted to be an artist. When he was young he met the painter Eugène Boudin who taught him to use oil paints, and encouraged him to paint out of doors. Monet found that his garden inspired him to paint pictures of it, particularly the water lilies.
Monet used broad brush strokes to build up his pictures, and painted quite quickly to try and get the idea of the light he could see into his paintings. If you go very close to one of his pictures it is hard to see what it shows, but if you stand back everything becomes clear.
His later paintings include series, in which he paints the same subject in different lights. For example, he painted a series of pictures of haystacks in a field, and another series of pictures of the west front of Rouen Cathedral.
In the Art Studio students were inspiried by Monet's painting Waterlillies focusing on the bridge and the light on the water.
Art Appreciation: Wyland
Today, the Wyland name has become synonymous with the new generation of awareness about environmental conservation. Through his unique marine life paintings, sculptures, and photography, Wyland has inspired a generation about the importance of marine life conservation. His life – like his art – can find him anywhere around the world, at any time, from the Antarctic ice shelf on a photo expedition to document climate change to a grassroots journey down the Mississippi River on a mission of conservation.
The multi-faceted artist, scuba diver, educator, and explorer has hosted several television programs, including, “Wyland’s Ocean World” series on the Discovery Channel’s Animal Planet Network, “Wyland: A Brush With Giants” and “Wyland’s Art Studio,” a series for national public television. His mission of engaging people through nature-themed art and a more environmentally friendly lifestyle has led to strategic alliances with such notable organizations as the United States Olympic Team, United Nation Environment Program, and Walt Disney Studios, to name a few.
Wyland’s 100th and final Monumental Marine Life Mural, Hands Across the Oceans, a 24,000-square-foot, half-mile-long series of canvas murals with student artists from 110 countries, was displayed in October 2008 at the National Mall in Washington, D.C., and honored by the National Park Service, Smithsonian Institution, White House Council on Environmental Quality, and the U.S. Department of the Interior. In May 2010, the United Nations released six Wyland images for an international stamp issue celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission.

TEACHING IS THE GREATEST ACT OF OPTIMISM!
Here at TerraNichol Academy of The Arts Preschool, we feel very passionate about our profession. Education is so powerful and it can change the world. It is the supreme art of the teacher to awaken joy in the creative expression and pursuit of knowledge. We teach from our hearts, open minds, and help facilitate the love of learning. Thank you to all our students and families for spoiling us on teacher appreciation week reminding us we are very appreciated and respected as professional teachers. Sometimes we have to remind ourselves to stop, breathe, relax and take a moment for ourselves to refresh. Teacher appreciation week was nice because we did just that with fresh coffee, homemade treats, lunch and breakfast deliveries, gift cards, the aroma of fresh flowers and garden plants, chocolate and lovely gifts. It gives us a chance to reflect on the difference we are making in our students and our community. Again, thank you for touching our hearts! We are so lucky to have a job that feels like play each day.
Thank you to our fabulous TerraNichol Academy Of The Arts Teacher Appreciation chair committee members. You are so dear to our hearts.
Warm Regards,

Dear Parent Tribe,
We are writing this letter to express our deepest appreciation to all our students and their parents that recently reminded us of why we love our job as early childhood educators and why we feel so very blessed to be teaching at TerraNichol Academy Of The Arts school and some of us being a part of the wonderful intern/volunteer teaching program as a teaching campus. Each of you truly is a testimony of what is positive about our school and the program.
To each of the parents, we cannot begin to express our gratitude to each of you for allowing us the privilege of being a part of the teaching team and entrusting us with your child/children. Your love and support for these children are refreshing. We can honestly say, that each one of these students has taught us as much as we hope we have taught them.
Thank you for making Teacher Appreciation Week so very special. We enjoyed all the pampering and being spoiled for the week. We wanted everyone to know how sincerely grateful we are for your thoughtfulness and kind words. Thank you for thinking of the teaching team.
Warm Regards,
Terra Tominelli-Founder

Family Meetings
4 Steps to a Successful Family Meeting
- By Rebecca Louick
Most parents strive for a strong, connected family. One where their kids feel heard and appreciated, and their parental values are deeply instilled.
While this goal is important, it can also be a challenging one. Despite good intentions, it’s the daily routines and inevitable detours to our routine that can undermine our best efforts. Attention is devoted to “putting out fires” rather than bonding and deepening the connections we desire most.
But what if there was a way to address both everyday problems and our greater goals for our families? To employ a simple strategy to create a bonded, resilientfamily unit?
Enter the family meeting. Key to building a connected, positive family culture, family meetings can address everything from celebrating accomplishments and distributing chores to facing stressful or serious issues.
Benefits of family meetings include better communication, improved problem-solving skills, and the opportunity to be proactive and mindful about challenges (rather than reactive) for everyone involved. Kids’ sense of independence grows when they make decisions that impact the family.
Here are 4 necessary steps to get started, and create a meeting that supports and strengthens your family bond.
