ABSENCE MANAGEMENT MISSING TEACHER INFORMATION

Due to a data error in Oracle, some teacher information has been showing up blank or with a “YES” or “No” where subject information would normally be. Unfortunately, since Absence Management pulls from Oracle this information will not populate until the issue is resolved.

We greatly appreciate your patience in continually taking assignments to make the best of this situation. In the meantime, we do recommend contacting the campus to gather the needed information.

STAYING LEARNER FOCUSED WITH STRUGGLING AND SPECIAL POPULATIONS STUDENTS

Dallas ISD considers all our students’ learners and scholars. All our schools are filled with an abundance of potential that comes in many forms. Unfortunately, we have several scholars who go unnoticed or underserved when the regular assigned teacher is not present. Those are our struggling learners and special needs and special populations. Here are a couple of tips for staying learner focused for our struggling and special populations students.

  • Inclusion Support – When accepting an assignment ask if there are any students who will be receiving inclusion support during your class. Ask the office manager or inquire who is the inclusion teacher on campus. Also, read any notes that the teacher has left for the substitute. Often times the teacher leaves a note in regards to inclusion support.

  • Observation – Not all students have inclusion help or identified as special education. However, there are struggling learners. They tend to act out or not complete assignments because they need help understanding the question, reading assistance, vocabulary is limited and may need help writing word, and may have low self-esteem.

  • Groups – It is appropriate to allow students to work in small groups or to even lead a small group with a couple of students who may be struggling with an assignment. It is also appropriate at times to work through or complete the assignment as a class.

  • Give Time to Think - Students need time to think and also time to work through assignments in there on way. It’s ok to allow time but also monitor the student’s time so they can stay on task and keep working. Students who struggle will take longer to complete assignments.

  • Encouragement – Struggling learners need lots of encouragement and positive affirmation to even attempt the work. Once they attempt the work, acknowledge things that are correct about there thinking even if the answer is not completely correct. Ask questions that will stimulate their active knowledge so that the student will be able arrive at the correct answer on their own.

As a reminder, you will receive feedback from teachers after your substitute experience. We've provided the questions that the teachers will answer below, as a way to guide your efforts in their absence.
