News from Mrs. Kott
Wow, that sure was a lot of snow! I hope you were able to get outside and enjoy the beauty of nature this week. Playing in the snow is a great way to sharpen the saw. It’s good for your body, mind, heart, and soul. One of my favorite parts is when we come inside for hot cocoa.
With winter weather being unpredictable, remember to be proactive and plan ahead. Have a back up plan if you are having car trouble or miss the bus. Have some indoor activities that children can do if you need to work from home or have a sitter come over. Books, puzzles and board games are always great choices.
As always, if there is anything that we can support you with, let us know. We are so grateful to have such a wonderful learning community!
Truly,
Denise Kott
It's February, not a lot happening right now!
Recess During Cold Weather
If the temperature, with the wind chill, is 10° or above all students will go out for recess. When snow is present, if your Y5– 3rd grade student does not wear boots and snow pants or if your 4th-5th grade student does not wear boots, they will remain on the blacktop for recess.
Please remember to send students with hats & gloves also. If you are in need of assistance with winter attire please call us, 248-328-3500.
The Leader in Me Section: Revisiting Habit 3: Put First Things First
Putting First Things First means to decide what is most important and take care of that task first. Thinking about what needs to be done tomorrow, or by the end of the week can be overwhelming, especially for children. Learning to prioritize can help reduce stress as tasks tend to not “stack up.” Another principle of this habit is work first, then play. An example would be, if your child wants to play video games, but has not completed their homework/chores, they should get the work done first. By Putting First Things First, priorities are accomplished and become a sense of pride.
A powerful way to put first things first is by looking at the big picture of your life, and ensure that you are spending your time on the things most important to you. Those are the “big rocks.” When you schedule the big rocks first, it will help you not spend too much time on lower priority tasks or activities. If you feel like you don't have enough time to do something important that you want to do, you have to learn how to MAKE time for it, even if that means delaying or eliminating other less important items from your schedule. You can't find more time, but you can always change the way you use the time you already have.
At home, talk about the chores or activities that must be done first. Partner, or team up to get the work done. Then, celebrate completing the priorities and do something fun together. Another idea, work together as a family to create a schedule that includes what is most important, then fill in the rest of what needs to get done around the “big rocks.”
