A Message From The Board of Directors
Happy Spring!
After years of thinking I should, over the winter I finally did read Vilhelm Moberg’s Emigrants series. The account - fictional but based on the author’s on-site research in Chisago Lakes - covers a Swedish family’s 1850s journey to the United States and their homesteading experience in our then unsettled neighborhood. Unexpectedly enjoying the historic detail and description of familiar landscapes, I couldn’t help finding parallels to our situation as the area’s current occupants. The story took on a relevance in daily life. Friends and family have patiently heard my enthusiastic explanations of the plot and insights from the reading; our son began to ask from time to time, “What’s new with Karl Oskar?” Among the complexities of our immigration history are examples of encouragement. Here are some thoughts:
• PERSEVERANCE: After crossing the ocean to New York in a rickety boat, traveling cross-country and upriver, the Nilsson’s, young and old, WALKED from Stillwater to Taylors Falls! It could be worse for 21st century folk …
• FELLOWSHIP: Kristina played an essential role in her family enterprise, but was so homesick and lonely at her remote farm site. How she would appreciate attending Chisago Lakes Area Chamber Business After Hours!
• APPRECIATION: Even within meager means, Karl Oskar and Kristina made special moments with familiar foods and sentimental plants. At our monthly Chamber board meetings, we “share wins” with good news; at the monthly lunch, the Chamber-at- large is invited to share successes and promote events.
My expedition with the Emigrants was launched in the first place because I attended Chamber lunch at the library, stopping at their book sale to stock our Little Library at Al’s. An especially nice vintage copy of the first of four books in the series had been donated for me to find!
We all have stories of the connections we make in real life through the Chamber. Especially if you’re at a desk all day or if you work at home, I encourage everyone to attend - or, better, volunteer at - a Chamber event or two this season and enjoy those connections. Pretty sure Karl and Kristina would approve.
