Elementary School Counseling Newsletter 9/12-9/16
Meet Ms. Powell...
My name is Anitra Powell and I am the Elementary Professional School Counselor at Marie G. Davis Military and Global Leadership Academy. I am a graduate of North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Speech Language Pathology and Audiology. In May of 2016, I obtained my Masters of Arts degree in School Counseling from Clark Atlanta University. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, shopping, basketball, and spending time with my family and friends.
I am excited about being at MGLA and the opportunity to work with the cadets here. Please take a moment and review this newsletter and learn a little more about the comprehensive counseling program offered to our cadets. I look forward to working with you throughout this school year to assist our cadets in having a successful and emotionally healthy academic year.

School Counselors help students in the area of academics.
Professional School Counselors work with students to assist them in academic areas. Cadets can come to the counselor to address strategies for study and organizational skills. On occasion, students are not performing well academically and require a plan and interventions to improve their academics. If your cadet is in need of some academic support please contact me via email or phone.
School Counselors help students address personal social issues.
Professional School Counselors work with students to address their social emotional needs. Students may not perform well academically due to social emotional concerns. Counselors can work with students on improving relationships with peers and adults that might be impacting their academic performance. School counselors also work with students on social skills to improve their communication with other students, teachers, and family members. Family changes such as divorce, separations, or grief and loss are other personal social needs that can be addressed through the school counselor.
School Counselors helps students with college and career readiness skills.
Professional School Counselors provide students with the resources to prepare them for college and/or their chosen career path. School counselors explore colleges and careers with students to introduce them to different options for their future. Students enjoy learning about different career clusters and the educational path it takes to achieve their future career goals.
