Centerview families,
You never know what April will bring when it comes to the weather! I’m always checking my National Weather Service App on my phone to see what drop-off and pick-up will feel like so I can decide what to wear. Most importantly, what’s the weather come recess…is it too cold or will it rain? CAN WE SEND STUDENTS OUTSIDE? We are immersed in weather conversations every day. We all have thoughts and it seems to pass the time with great concern. I hope it’s not just me!
With the weather in mind, this week is Severe Weather Awareness Week in Minnesota. We refresh, remind and educate everyone about the seasonal threats from severe weather and how to avoid them. It’s a great time to practice emergency plans. At Centerview, we will be participating in the Minnesota statewide Tornado Drill Day tomorrow, April 7 at 1:45 p.m.
Safety is a priority at Centerview and across our district, we will have healthy conversations and prepare our students and practice to assure our processes are in place.
You, as a family, may also want to plan and participate in the Evening Tornado Drill also taking place tomorrow, April 7 at 6:45 p.m. It’s a great time to reinforce your sheltering plans at home, too.
This week, we are hosting the Scholastic Book Fair in our learning commons. Students always look forward to this opportunity to identify new and exciting books to read as they expand their vocabularies and interests. Students will be previewing and identifying books through the week. Our Book Fair offers eWallet, a safe and secure alternative to cash. Simply create a free account to add funds and/or invite family and friends to contribute so your child can select their own books. Visit our Centerview Book Fair homepage to learn more and get started with eWallet and online shopping.
A quick reminder, there will be no school on Friday, April 15. Mark your calendar and make sure you have a plan for that day.
As always, let me know if you have any thoughts or questions as we proceed.
Take care,
Mike
Learner Profiles: Learning the learner
What does Maya know about herself at age six? She likes to eat tacos. She wants to be a ballerina. Her favorite color is blue. By the end of kindergarten as she’s turning seven? She might know that she doesn’t like working in groups. She prefers a wobble chair (to help with concentration). She’s interested in animals and (it’s likely) she still likes tacos.
A learner profile documents this kind of information – a student’s strengths, interests and needs as a learner as well as who they are as a person. It grows as they do during their time at Spring Lake Park Schools and supports them to become powerful, independent and curious learners.
In kindergarten, the profile primarily helps teachers to know a student and design engaging experiences for them. As they grow, students take more ownership. By graduation, the goal is for each student to know their strengths, interests and needs so well they can navigate anything.

About the show
In a Western territory just after the turn of the 20th century, a high-spirited rivalry between local farmers and cowboys provides a colorful background for Curly, a charming cowboy, and Laurey, a feisty farm girl, to play out their love story. Their romantic journey, as bumpy as a surrey ride down a country road, contrasts with the comic exploits of brazen Ado Annie and hapless Will Parker in a musical adventure embracing hope, determination and the promise of a new land.
"It's going to be a pretty phenomenal show - a unique and thought-provoking take on this old chestnut." - Kevin Dutcher, SLPHS theater director
