Meadow Park News

Principal's Corner
Hello Meadow Park Families,
The last week of school for the 18-19 school year is upon us! We have a lot going on throughout the week and hope our students will make some positive memories as they say goodbye to our outgoing 8th graders and head into summer.
Today, cards were emailed to families of 8th grade students who will be recognized in our 8th Grade Recognition assembly. We hope they arrive by Monday at the latest. The assembly will start at 9:45 on Friday, June 14th (after we are able to get 6th and 7th graders into the gym). We will have our 6th and 7th grade students on either side of the stands and allow parents to sit in the middle. If all goes according to plan, we will have those sections marked with tape for clarity. We look forward to celebrating our 8th graders' accomplishments with you!
That day, we don't allow students to bring backpacks. All small bags and lunches will be searched as students enter the building. Anyone accidentally bringing a backpack will be asked to leave it with one of our staff members at the door and then we will pass them back at the end of the day. We will send further information next week about how to make the last day successful!
Make it a great last week!
Jared Freeman
Principal

Alex and The Misfits Perform for Families and Meadow Park
If you’ve seen either of the recent Meadow Park Band concerts, then you’ve probably seen an odd group of self-organized band kids walk up to the mic and blow their assorted variety of instruments: Alex and the Misfits.
This group of students was drawn from the morning jazz band, or the “Jazz Ambassadors,” who practice before school starts every Tuesday through Friday. A certain Alexander “Alex” Moon took it upon himself to hold open the front door in the morning before morning jazz band began, allowing students into the building. While he held the door, he played--and still plays--an odd instrument known as the melodica, both because he likes playing music and because holding the door was getting boring without doing anything else.
One day, Mr. Schlabach (the band director) called Alex into the band room office and suggested that he should take one of his more frequently-played songs and write out an arrangement for said song. The arrangement would have to fit an ensemble of musicians from the morning jazz band.
Alex willingly took up the task of putting together an ensemble, arranging the song, and organizing rehearsals for the group, who ultimately became known as Alex and the Misfits. Alex recruited James “Jimmy” Winkel (tenor saxophone), Brent Davis (trombone), Praneel Madhuvanesh (clarinet), Ishan Ghosh (clarinet), and Dylan Hulsey (tuba). The only piece the ensemble was to perform was a certain russian-inspired song called “Rush B.”
After many mostly unsuccessful mishap-filled rehearsals, the piece finally began to come together and the group reported to Mr. Schlabach that they would have the piece ready by concert night. The rest, as we know, is history. Enjoy the embedded iMovie clip to see their final ensemble. Article Written by Alexander Moon
